You get one attemptat the real thing

Most candidates walk into their first HireVue with zero practice: one real attempt, unfamiliar game mechanics, and no idea what is being measured. The skills are trainable — the format is what catches people out.

Why it works

Practice moves HireVue game scores. We can measure it.

The typical candidate improves their score by a median of +25% between their first and fifth practice attempt — with no employer ever seeing practice data. The practice holds up on its own, too: 84% of 6,000+ post-game ratings answer “Great”.

What is the HireVue game-based assessment?

After you apply to a participating employer, you receive an email invitation with a private assessment link — there is no public demo of the real battery, which makes realistic simulations the closest substitute. The employer selects a subset of games for the role, most commonly four to six, and each game is individually timed at roughly three to five minutes. Cognitive games (like Numerosity and Digitspan) measure speed and accuracy under time pressure; spatial games (like Shapedance) measure visual processing; personality games (like Portrait) map responses to work-style traits.

HireVue is right that there are no cheat codes — these games measure real abilities. What is trainable is familiarity: most candidates meet the format for the first time with their one real attempt on the line, and the mechanics, timing, and scoring are stable across employers. Rehearsing realistic simulations converts an unknown test into a known one.

How HireVue games are scored

HireVue does not publish a scoring scale, and candidates almost never see their own results. What is known: cognitive and spatial games score speed and accuracy within the time limit, results are benchmarked against other candidates and against profiles of successful employees in the role, and personality games map responses to trait profiles rather than right-or-wrong answers. There is no penalty model published for wrong answers, but accuracy-per-minute is the consistent theme across the cognitive games.

We keep a detailed, regularly updated breakdown in HireVue Game Scores Explained and a difficulty ranking of every game in Are HireVue Games Hard? The practical takeaway is the same either way: practice each game under real timing until accuracy stops climbing.

Which employers use HireVue games?

Employer processes differ by programme, country, role, and cycle. Our employer guides separate official confirmation from candidate-reported game names and point out when HireVue is used only for video while another vendor supplies the games.

The other half of your invitation: the video interview

Most employers pair the games with a one-way video interview. We research company questions from official careers pages and dated candidate reports, label every question by its evidence, and turn each company’s set into a timed mock interview — your first mock question is free, AI-scored.

HireVue assessment FAQ

What is the HireVue game-based assessment?

It is a set of short, timed browser games that employers send candidates after they apply. Instead of multiple-choice questions, each game measures a cognitive or behavioral trait — working memory, numerical reasoning, emotion recognition, or work style — through how you play. Results feed into the employer’s screening decision, usually before any human interview.

How many games are in a HireVue assessment?

The number varies by employer, role, and assessment design. Shell officially describes four games for its assessed-internship process; Pfizer Futures candidates reported three for Summer 2026; Philips officially describes one cognitive game in its early-career stage. Your invitation is the controlling source.

How long does the assessment take?

Most games run three to five minutes each, so a typical four-to-six-game battery takes about 15–25 minutes end to end. Each game is individually timed and there is no pause button once a game starts.

Can you practice HireVue games beforehand?

Yes. The game formats are consistent across employers, so realistic practice simulations let you learn the mechanics, timing, and scoring before the real attempt. Practicing removes the largest single disadvantage: burning your one real attempt just figuring out the rules.

Can you fail the HireVue games?

There is no published pass/fail score. Employers see percentile-style results benchmarked against other candidates and role models, and each employer sets its own bar for who advances — so a result that ends one application can pass at another company. Because results are relative, accuracy within each time limit is what moves you up the distribution, and that is exactly what practice improves.

Are there cheat codes or hacks for HireVue games?

No — HireVue itself says there are no cheat codes, and we agree. The games measure real abilities under time pressure. What is trainable is familiarity: knowing each game’s mechanics, timing, and scoring before your one real attempt. Across our matched practice data, the median candidate improves their score 25% between their first and fifth practice attempt — that is preparation, not a hack.

What is a good HireVue game score?

HireVue does not publish score scales, and employers see percentile-style results benchmarked against other candidates and role models rather than a raw score. That means the practical goal is maximizing accurate answers within each time limit. Our scoring guide explains what is known about how results are calculated.

Do you get to see your HireVue results?

Usually not. Most employers do not share game results with candidates — you typically learn only whether you advanced to the next stage. That opacity is a major reason to practice with a tool that does show you transparent, per-game feedback.
