What the journeyman electrician exam tests
Every state exam we cover is multiple choice and built on the National Electrical Code. Expect code lookups (wiring methods, grounding, services, motors, special occupancies), code calculations (load, box and conduit fill, ampacity, voltage drop, motor circuits) and electrical theory. Most exams are open book, so speed in the code book matters as much as knowing the rules.
Exam format by state
Formats come from each board’s current candidate bulletin. Each state page has the full details, sources and a practice exam built to that format.

Common questions
What is on the journeyman electrician exam?
Most states test the National Electrical Code (wiring, grounding, services, motors, special occupancies), code calculations (load, box and conduit fill, ampacity, voltage drop) and electrical theory. Many add state laws and rules.
Is the journeyman electrician exam open book?
Usually yes. Some states let you bring your own NEC (Texas, Michigan, Maryland, Washington), while others provide the book at the test center or on screen (California, Colorado, Minnesota, Hawaii).
Which NEC edition will my exam use?
It depends on the state. Texas, Colorado and Minnesota now test the 2026 NEC; California, Michigan, Oklahoma, Iowa and the ICC R17 exam use the 2023 NEC; Washington, Maryland, Virginia and Hawaii use the 2020 NEC.
How many questions are on the exam?
Between 60 and 100 in the states we cover. Texas splits 85 items into two separately scored parts.
Are these real exam questions?
No. Every question is original and written for practice. Explanations cite the NEC section by number without reproducing the code text.
