Common questions

How many questions are on an ASE test?

A3 and A4 have 40 scored questions, A1, A2 and A5 have 45, A6, A7 and A8 have 50, and G1 has 55. Every certification test also has 10 unscored research questions that are not marked.

How much do ASE tests cost?

In 2026 ASE charges a $34 registration fee per order plus $62 for each A-series or G1 test. Advanced L-series tests are $124 each.

What score do I need to pass an ASE test?

ASE reports pass or fail and does not publish a fixed passing percentage. Your score report breaks your result down by content area, which is why our practice exams score you by content area too.

How do I become an ASE Master Technician?

Pass all eight tests from A1 to A8 and document two years of hands-on work experience. A9 is not required for Master Automobile Technician status.

How long does ASE certification last?

Five years. Recertification tests are about half as long as the originals, and ASE caps recertification test fees at $186 per order.

Can I take ASE tests before I have work experience?

Yes. You can test first; ASE issues the certificate once your work experience is documented. A-series tests need two years, G1 needs one, and approved training can substitute for part of it.

If I fail, when can I retake an ASE test?

After 30 full days. The same wait applies after a pass.
