What is the HireVue Numerosity game?

The HireVue Numerosity game is a short, timed mental-arithmetic task used in some game-based hiring assessments. It shows a target result, an operation such as addition or division, and a set of number tiles. You select the combination that produces the target before the level timer expires.

This guide explains the assessment game—not the broader scientific concept of numerosity, which refers to the number of items in a set or the perception of quantity. If an employer sent you a HireVue games invitation, you can practice the Numerosity game in our free simulator after reviewing the rules below.

Numerosity rules and format

The precise assessment battery can vary by employer and role, so your invitation and on-screen instructions are controlling. In the documented version of the game:

  • A target result and one arithmetic operation are shown.
  • You choose two or more available numbers that reach the target using that operation.
  • Correct responses move you through progressively more difficult levels.
  • Later questions can introduce more tiles, less obvious combinations, and harder operations.
  • The task is timed, so the aim is accurate progress—not clicking every plausible combination as quickly as possible.

HireVue and MindX's published validation study timed its research version of Numerosity at 3.5 minutes. Candidate-facing deployments can change, so do not assume that one historical duration or level count is guaranteed for your assessment.

What does Numerosity assess?

HireVue describes its cognitive games as tasks intended to assess job-relevant cognitive skills. Numerosity most directly demands:

  • Mental arithmetic: Manipulating numbers without a calculator.
  • Numerical reasoning: Recognizing factors, complements, and valid combinations.
  • Processing speed: Finding a workable path before the timer expires.
  • Attention control: Staying accurate while targets, tiles, and operations change.

The 2020 MindX validation study did not treat one game level as a stand-alone hiring verdict. It combined behavioral and performance features across a battery of games to predict a broader cognitive-ability measure.

How Numerosity scoring works

HireVue does not publish a universal Numerosity pass mark. Employers can select different batteries and use results within a role-specific assessment process, so a practice level is not an official HireVue percentile or a guaranteed hiring threshold.

The published MindX research tracked several kinds of performance data, including correct progress, errors, speed, and how far a player advanced. That makes two ideas important:

  1. Accuracy and progress both matter. Fast guessing can increase errors; extreme caution can leave too few completed levels.
  2. Your result belongs to a battery. One raw level from one practice simulator cannot reproduce an employer's private scoring model.

Use practice scores to compare your own repeated attempts under the same conditions. They are most useful for finding whether addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or time pressure is limiting you.

Strategy for addition and subtraction

  • Start with complements: For a target of 25, seeing 17 should immediately prompt a search for 8.
  • Scan large numbers first: Large tiles reduce the number of plausible combinations quickly.
  • Build a subtotal: If there is no obvious pair, combine two easy numbers and search for the remaining difference.
  • Stop when you have a complete solution: Continuing to scan after finding a valid combination wastes time and invites second-guessing.

For subtraction, confirm the direction required by the interface. Mentally rewrite the task as a missing-number problem whenever possible: if 31 minus something must equal 18, search for 13.

Strategy for multiplication and division

  • Learn factor pairs: Know the common pairs for targets such as 24, 36, 48, 56, 72, and 90.
  • Check divisibility before calculating: Even numbers, digit sums, and final digits quickly rule out impossible options.
  • Translate division into multiplication: Instead of repeatedly dividing 84 by the tiles, ask which tile multiplied by the target produces 84.
  • Prioritize exact factors: Approximation is useful for scanning, but the submitted combination must satisfy the target exactly.

A focused practice plan

  1. Play one baseline round without changing your natural approach.
  2. Note which operation produces the longest pauses or most errors.
  3. Drill that operation separately for five to ten minutes.
  4. Play another timed round and compare accuracy, completed levels, and response stability.
  5. Stop before fatigue turns the session into careless repetition.

The goal is familiarity with the task and steadier execution. Practice cannot reveal the employer's private scoring model, and it should never be described as a guaranteed way to pass.

Frequently asked questions

Is Numerosity the same as a numeracy test?

Not exactly. Numeracy is a broad ability involving numbers. Numerosity is the name used for this specific game format, while the unqualified word also has meanings in mathematics and cognitive science.

What is a good Numerosity score?

There is no public universal pass score. A higher accurate level in the same simulator is evidence of improvement within that simulator, not an official HireVue benchmark.

Can I use a calculator?

Follow the assessment instructions. Numerosity is designed as a mental-arithmetic task, so outside tools should not be used unless your invitation or an approved accommodation explicitly allows them.
