Count the marks; their layout is a counting aid. Add the first two counts to get the third. The complete rows show 2 + 2 = 4 and 3 + 3 = 6. The bottom row therefore gives 3 + 4 = 7. Keep the same shape and fill.

The shapes cycle square → triangle → circle and then repeat, moving one step forward across a row or down a column. Every row and column contains each shape once. The bottom row and rightmost column both need triangles. Keep the positions and fill unchanged.

Rule to remember: Use each of the three shapes once per row and column.

Across each row of the matrix, the circle moves one place right and the square moves one place left inside each figure, wrapping at their respective edges. Neither changes its fill or vertical level. The answer places the circle at bottom left and the square at top centre.

Track shape and position separately. Every row and column contains each of the three shapes once, and each of the three occupied positions once. The bottom row needs a triangle for its missing shape and middle left for its missing position. The rightmost column confirms both. Shape and position follow different cycles, so copying a whole figure with just one correct feature fails.

A method for unfamiliar matrices.

    Separate the features

    Compare position, number, direction, shape, and fill. A matrix can change more than one feature at once, so track each one separately.

  2. 2

    Check the whole relationship

    Test your rule against another completed row or column. A pattern that explains only two neighbouring figures may be incomplete.

  3. 3

    Predict before comparing answers

    Describe the missing figure, then examine all six options. Watch for an answer that gets one rule right but misses another.

  4. 4

    Use the review to diagnose errors

    Name the relationship you missed: movement, distribution, rotation, or a combination rule. Practise that reasoning without a clock before another timed sitting.

Matrigma practice questions

What is the Matrigma assessment?

Matrigma is Assessio’s non-verbal reasoning assessment. You identify the rules connecting eight figures in a three-by-three matrix and choose the missing ninth figure from six options. It tests reasoning with visual relationships, rather than vocabulary or a separate arithmetic section.

How many questions are there, and how long do I have?

Adaptive Matrigma lasts up to 12 minutes, with 60 seconds per item and a maximum of 40 items. The number presented can vary; it is not a fixed 40-question paper. Our timed practice uses these time limits and a 40-item cap. Our shorter learning mode has 12 questions without a timer.

Is this practice adaptive?

Our practice starts with an easier item and adjusts the next question’s difficulty after your response. The three difficulty levels are our editorial judgments. This is adaptive-style practice, not Assessio’s calibrated adaptive test, and its accuracy or difficulty levels cannot be converted into an official score.

Is Matrigma the same as MAP or Alva?

No. MAP is a separate personality assessment, although an employer may invite you to take both MAP and Matrigma. Alva is a different assessment provider. Check the name in your invitation so you prepare for the right test.

Can I return to questions or pause the timer?

In our practice you move forward one question at a time. You can change your selected answer before moving on, or skip that question permanently. When time expires, your current selection is recorded and you move on, or the sitting finishes if the overall time has expired. Timed practice keeps counting through reloads and while the tab is in the background. Closing the tab can remove unfinished practice data. These are our practice controls; follow the instructions in your actual assessment.

Is the practice free?

The worked examples on this page are free without an account. Create a free account for your first practice sitting, choosing either mode. Further sittings follow the replay access shown in your account; a Matrigma category pass is available when required. Saved results and answer explanations remain free to view.

Will my result tell me whether I will pass?

No. Your review shows your correct answers, unanswered questions, pacing, and explanations for our original questions. It does not estimate an official Matrigma C-score, IQ, percentile, or hiring outcome. Different question paths and repeated practice can change raw accuracy, so use the review to understand your reasoning.

Does this cover classic Matrigma?

This practice focuses on the adaptive format. Assessio also describes a less common classic version with a 40-minute time limit. The visual reasoning methods can still help with familiarisation, but this is not a classic-format simulation. Follow the version and timing in your invitation.
