The Bain & Company hiring process at a glance

  1. 1Online application — CV, academics and office preference; Bain says applicants generally hear within 60 days.
  2. 2Digital assessment (Sova or TestGorilla) — Office-dependent, ~30–40 min (~52 min for Seoul AC); TestGorilla is one sitting and webcam-proctored, Sova allows multiple sittings before the deadline.
  3. 3One-way video pre-screen (regional, reported) — Reported for Southeast Asia (3 questions, ~5 min prep and 2–3 min answer each, plus 25 MCQs in 50 min) and a US experienced-hire 8–10 minute digital interview; dated 2017–2022 and possibly retired.
  4. 4First-round interview — Case-based and usually virtual.
  5. 5Final rounds and offer — London runs two case rounds; Seoul runs three case-based rounds with the later rounds typically in person.

How the Bain & Company hiring process works

The Bain hiring process starts with an online application including CV, academics and office preference. Where an office uses one, Bain then emails a personalised link to a digital assessment, and the email itself says which vendor applies: Sova or TestGorilla. Bain states the assessment takes approximately 30–40 minutes and tests problem solving, communication and analytical skills, and that requirements vary by role and office, so some candidates are never asked to sit one. TestGorilla must be completed in a single sitting; Sova may be completed across multiple sittings before the stated deadline. Calculators, pen and paper are allowed, AI tools are prohibited, and missing the deadline disqualifies the application.

A one-way video interview is not part of Bain's officially published process anywhere, and the two video-shaped things Bain does document are different. For Seoul Associate Consultant candidates the TestGorilla assessment is webcam-proctored — the camera stays on, the full face must be visible, and the session is recorded and monitored — which is invigilation, not an interview. For European and Middle East offices, Bain says candidates answer a few short video questions about their comfort with different technical skills and states these are not used to evaluate candidacy. Neither is a scored one-way interview, despite being widely described as one by other prep sites.

Where a genuine one-way video interview has been reported, it sat before the first live round and looked like a screening stage in its own right. Southeast Asia Associate Consultant candidates reported a HireVue pre-screen of three questions, each with roughly five minutes of preparation and two to three minutes to record, with one attempt per question and automatic advance, delivered alongside a written section of 25 multiple-choice questions in 50 minutes built on a case-style business scenario. Reports describe the mix as roughly two behavioural questions plus one business-judgement or mini-case question, assessing answer-first structure, framework and communication rather than pure fit. Separately, one candidate reports a US experienced-hire "digital interview" of about 8–10 minutes with three questions selected at random from a pool. Both formats are dated: one Southeast Asia candidate reported in November 2020 that no video was required at that stage, and Bain's own Southeast Asia recruiting page describes only two to three interview rounds with no video pre-screen, so treat this stage as configurable and possibly retired.

Live rounds are case-based and this is where Bain concentrates its published guidance. Seoul runs three rounds, all case-based, with the first usually virtual and the second and third typically in person, on a cycle that runs twice a year. London runs two rounds, both case interviews, held in the London office or over Zoom, with first rounds in mid-November and finals in late November to early December. Bain publishes practice cases including Coffee Shop Co. and FashionCo., says its cases come from actual client work and are not brainteasers, and looks for sensible assumptions, quick mental maths and building constructively on the interviewer's ideas. Fit questioning at Bain is often described by candidates and ex-Bain coaches as CV-blind, meaning you describe experiences without naming the organisations. Some roles add a written take-home assignment of around three days or a coding challenge, and Bain says applicants can generally expect to hear within 60 days, with Seoul screening outcomes no later than three weeks after the application deadline.

Best-supported scope: A one-way video pre-screen reported for Southeast Asia Associate Consultant hiring (2017–2019) and for a US experienced-hire "digital interview" (2022), typically three questions before the live case rounds. Treat it as regional and possibly retired, not as Bain's standard 2026 screen. Bain's current officially documented screen is a Sova or TestGorilla aptitude assessment, which is separate and is not a game battery.
