How the National Grid hiring process works

In the UK, early-careers applicants (graduate programmes, apprenticeships and industrial placements) start with an online application in three sections — basic details, academic history, and short motivational and skills questions — with no CV or cover letter required. Successful applicants are then invited to a HireVue digital assessment: an on-demand video interview that National Grid officially describes as three short competency-based questions taking 15-20 minutes in total, though candidates in some cycles report five or six questions, so treat the count as configurable by programme and year. You can record anytime and anywhere, including from abroad.

Candidates report roughly 30 seconds to a minute of thinking time once a question appears, up to three minutes per answer, and a limited number of re-record attempts (three or four, varying by role); officially there is a practice question you can retake as many times as you want before starting. The video interview is paired with HireVue game-based assessments measuring cognitive, social and emotional traits. Reports vary on whether the games run in the same session as the interview and on the count (two or four games); prep sites name HireVue's Numerosity (rapid numerical reasoning) and Shapedance (spatial rotation) titles, and some roles or older cycles report SHL-style verbal, numerical and abstract tests instead — the exact mix depends on the role.

UK candidates who pass the digital stage attend an in-person assessment centre in the UK, historically including a case-study presentation with about 90 minutes of preparation time, a group exercise and a competency interview, followed by offers. In the US, Graduate Development Program and internship applicants report an application, then the HireVue one-way interview with behavioural questions plus games, then hiring-manager, panel or case-style final interviews, with candidate reports putting the end-to-end process at roughly 44-50 days; the US careers site officially discloses that some assessments use AI- or statistically based scoring.

Experienced hires follow a different route: National Grid's official how-we-hire pages describe a live video or phone interview with two members of the team rather than a recorded one — one-way video is only evidenced for early careers. Note also that National Grid Electricity Distribution (formerly WPD) and NESO (the National Energy System Operator, separated from National Grid in 2024) recruit through their own variant processes.
