How the Optum hiring process works

Optum hiring runs on UnitedHealth Group's shared careers infrastructure, so Optum applications and process pages sit on careers.unitedhealthgroup.com and the official UHG hiring-process description governs Optum roles. You apply online, and for some positions UHG adds an online assessment to evaluate skills and competencies — officially described but not detailed by role, so expect it to be requisition-dependent. A recruiter review follows, after which UHG says selected candidates may be scheduled for an interview in one of three formats: in person, live phone or video, or digital recorded. Treat the recorded round as role-dependent rather than universal.

The digital recorded interview is the one-way video stage. It runs on Modern Hire/HireVue, with UHG operating its own branded tenant at unitedhealthgroup.hirevue.com. Reports and UHG's own advice page describe the same shape: an unrecorded practice question you can retry as many times as you like, then a set of preset questions — candidates report roughly five, occasionally six for technology roles where one item is a technical challenge. Each response is capped at about three minutes on a countdown timer, and in most instances you can re-record an answer up to three times before submitting. UHG states plainly that a team member reviews the recordings and that artificial intelligence does not. Employers configure these settings per requisition, so your invite email is the authority on question count, timing, and retakes.

Timing reports cluster around a fast front end. An early-careers guide dated July 2026 describes the digital video interview invite arriving typically within 24 to 48 hours of applying, followed by a recruiter phone screen of about 20 to 30 minutes, then a panel or "super day" round for interns, with offers in roughly three to five business days and about 20 days from application to offer overall. UHG publishes no completion deadline for the recorded round; reports suggest finishing within about 48 hours of receipt shortens time to decision, but confirm the deadline in your own invite. Hourly roles report a longer end-to-end timeline, around 28 days from application to start, with background check and drug screen after the offer. Reports vary and none of these timings are officially published.

Regional differences matter. Optum's India campus track is distinct and does not report a one-way video stage at all: candidates describe an online test on HirePro or Mettl — for example a 90-minute Mettl paper combining a graph coding question, cognitive items, analytics items, and technical multiple choice — followed by live technical interviews and an HR round. Technology candidates elsewhere report LeetCode-style easy-to-medium problems in the live technical rounds. Note also that Optum is a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary and is unrelated to Optus, the Australian telecommunications company.
