NJ Chiefs exam practice and NJSACOP guide
The phrase “NJ Chiefs test” can hide an important difference: NJSACOP administers more than one examination. Before studying a particular question format, identify the assessment named in your department’s announcement or candidate instructions. This guide helps you separate the administrator, the underlying test and the rest of the hiring process.

What to check before you prepare
The public NJSACOP brochure lists several written entrance options. Department announcements determine which applies and when it is administered.
- Administrator
- New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police
- Listed entrance options
- LST, NCJOSI² and NGLE
- Different from NJ LEE
- Use the named municipal or academy process, not the CSC LEE timetable
- Format confirmation
- Check the agency’s announcement and candidate instructions

Identify the actual examination
NJSACOP’s published entrance options include LST, which combines cognitive and several non-cognitive measures; NCJOSI², which combines cognitive and integrity-related measures; and NGLE, which combines cognitive assessment with situational judgment. Those labels matter more than a generic “chiefs test” description when you choose a detailed preparation course.
Create a small comparison sheet for every agency you are applying to: exact exam name, official source, date, duration and next stage. Leave a field blank when it has not been confirmed. A familiar administrator or similar hiring advert is not enough evidence to fill in the missing information.
Build foundations while you confirm the format
Start with careful reading and rule application. Rewrite a paragraph as a few facts, then check which answer is supported by those facts. When a rule includes several requirements, test them separately. For written expression, look for changes in meaning as well as obvious spelling or grammar errors.
Once you know the product, widen your practice to its confirmed coverage. Direction exercises alone will not prepare you for every visual construct, and a policy-comprehension question is not a validated situational-judgment test. Use personal-history and behavioral instructions to prepare truthful responses, not to engineer a preferred profile. Keep academy fitness preparation and application paperwork on a separate checklist.
How to prepare
1. Read the agency notice
Record the exact name of the examination rather than only the administrator or department.
2. Resolve missing details
Check your candidate messages and linked official materials for duration, format and allowed equipment.
3. Practice the matching skills
Use a short untimed set, identify the cause of each error, then rotate through the confirmed skill areas.
4. Plan the whole selection process
Separate the written appointment from physical testing, interviews and other qualifying stages.
A NJSACOP administration does not automatically mean NCJOSI². These examples teach foundations rather than reproduce a particular chiefs examination.
Common questions
Does every NJ Chiefs test use NCJOSI²?
No. NJSACOP’s public brochure lists several entrance examinations. The hiring agency’s current notice is the starting point for identifying yours.
Can I use NJ LEE preparation instead?
Some reading and reasoning practice may transfer, but LEE uses a different named examination. Do not assume full coverage, identical timing or equivalent scoring.
What if the notice gives only a duration?
Treat the exact version as unconfirmed. Use the published duration for that appointment, and rely on official candidate instructions for the remaining details.
