Free pain management drillHow to study it
- Learn what each pain scale measures and which species it was built for.
- For each analgesic class, know where in the pain pathway it works; multimodal questions are built on that idea.
- Learn the species differences that are tested again and again: cats and NSAIDs, cats and local anesthetic doses, prey species that hide pain.
- Remember the technician’s role: recognize, score, report and carry out the plan. Questions that ask what the technician does next rarely end with changing the drug.

What pain guidelines does the VTNE follow?
The exam is built from AAVSB’s reference list, which includes three anesthesia and pain management texts for veterinary technicians. Our questions also follow the 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats: assess pain with a validated scale, treat it before it starts where possible, and combine drug classes.
How many pain management questions are on the VTNE?
Ten of the 150 scored questions, 7% of the exam, the same as dentistry and emergency medicine.
