Diagnostic Imaging on the VTNE
Diagnostic Imaging is 9 of the 150 scored questions, the smallest domain after communication. It covers producing diagnostic radiographs (dental radiographs belong to the dentistry domain), ultrasound and contrast studies, radiation safety, and caring for the imaging equipment.

What diagnostic imaging questions test
- Positioning and view names: lateral, ventrodorsal, dorsoventral, oblique and craniocaudal views, and the landmarks that define each study (tasks 6A and 6B)
- Technique: kilovoltage peak (kVp), milliamperage-seconds (mAs), focal distance, grids, collimation and measuring the patient (task 6B)
- Image quality: contrast, density, motion and positioning errors, and digital artifacts (task 6B)
- Contrast studies and ultrasound preparation (knowledge area 39)
- Radiation safety: ALARA, time, distance and shielding, dosimeters, lead aprons, gloves and thyroid shields, and who must never be in the room (knowledge area 40)
- Caring for imaging equipment and protective gear, and quality assurance (task 6C)

Free diagnostic imaging drillHow to study it
- Learn what kVp and mAs each control and how a change in one shows on the image. Most technique questions turn on that one idea.
- Learn the standard views for the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and limbs, and where to center and collimate for each.
- Know the safety rules cold. They are easy points and they come up every exam.
- Read a positioning question twice: ventrodorsal and dorsoventral are named for the direction the beam travels.
Common questions
Are dental radiographs part of diagnostic imaging on the VTNE?
No. The imaging domain covers radiographs “excluding dental”. Producing diagnostic dental radiographs is task 3D in the dentistry domain.
How many diagnostic imaging questions are on the VTNE?
Nine of the 150 scored questions, 6% of the exam. AAVSB’s imaging references are Lavin’s Radiography for Veterinary Technology and Diagnostic Imaging for Veterinary Technicians.
