Criteria distinguishes identifying facial emotion, anticipating emotional consequences and choosing ways to manage emotions in connected scenarios. Practice using the evidence in each situation instead of projecting how you personally would feel.

Which Australian Border Force roles and programs does this guide cover?

Australian Border Force recruitment includes different entry routes and specialist work. Start by checking that your advertisement is for BFORT before applying this assessment outline. Marine recruitment and general vacancies should not automatically inherit the same tests.

Preparation should cover both accurate task performance and clear communication. Keep the assessment invitation alongside your application information so that the current campaign’s dates, equipment requirements and instructions control your plan.

BFORT recruit entry route

ABF’s entry-level guidance distinguishes BFORT from its marine cadet pathway. Confirm the advertised route before using a recruit assessment guide.

Marine and other entry routes

ABF’s entry-level page separately identifies Border Force Officer recruits and Marine Tactical Officer–Cadets. A sea-going application requires its own role information; do not transfer requirements between these pathways.

Specialist and general vacancies

The wider careers overview includes marine specialists and general roles alongside recruit training. It also describes employment-suitability screening concerning character and integrity.

How does the Australian Border Force assessment work?

Cognify measures aptitude

Official source

Criteria describes Cognify as measuring problem solving, numerical reasoning and written accuracy. Prepare for objective tasks rather than treating it as a work-preference questionnaire.

Written and spoken comprehension

Official source

The BFORT pack describes reading source material and responding in writing and verbally, alongside behavioral video interviewing. Prepare to extract relevant information and explain your reasoning.

Eligibility is a separate requirement

Official source

The careers overview lists Australian citizenship, a minimum age of 18 and education or relevant-experience routes. Check the exact advertisement for the criteria that apply to your campaign.

No published BFORT cutoff here

No evidence found

Neither a sample provider report nor an independent practice score establishes an ABF pass mark. The reviewed candidate material does not disclose a universal selection threshold.

What happens in the Australian Border Force hiring process?

From assessment invitation to communication tasks

The pack describes progression between assessment stages.

  1. 1Complete the capability assessments in your invitation.
  2. 2If progressed, follow the instructions for the interview and literacy exercises.

Selection and training are different stages

The recruit-training page explains arrangements that matter after selection.

  1. 1Check the location covered by the campaign and whether relocation would be necessary.
  2. 2Training and later posting depend on operational requirements; a preferred location is not guaranteed.
  3. 3Use the offer to confirm the exact training breakdown and location. Assessments during training are different from recruitment tests.

When is the Australian Border Force assessment?

An application closing date, an invitation deadline and a training schedule are separate pieces of information. No single end-to-end recruiting duration is promised here.

How to prepare for the Australian Border Force assessment process

Use these practice suggestions to train relevant skills before the live assessment. They are not predictions of questions or a scoring formula.

1. Practice accuracy across three different tasks

Alternate short arithmetic, spatial fitting and proofreading drills. Review why each error occurred: calculation, misunderstanding a rule, overlooking a detail or rushing. Improvement comes from correcting the cause rather than repeatedly chasing a higher score.

2. Use a neutral incident passage for literacy practice

Read a short factual account, then write a concise summary and give a spoken version. Separate what the text says from your assumptions. Include the key people, sequence, evidence and unresolved points without adding details.

3. Prepare public-service judgment examples

Choose real examples of applying an unfamiliar procedure, handling a difficult interaction, supporting a teammate and admitting an error. Explain the situation, your responsibility, your actions and the result. Make your personal contribution clear.

4. Distinguish emotional ability from preference

For emotion scenarios, identify the person’s situation and the clues provided before selecting a response. For work-preference items, answer about your usual behavior. Avoid applying one rehearsed personality profile across unrelated formats.

5. Set up and plan your session

Check camera, microphone, internet and input equipment against the invitation. Record each deadline separately and leave time for technical support. Review the role’s location and duties so that your motivation reflects the work you could actually be offered.

Australian Border Force assessment FAQ

Do all Australian Border Force jobs use Criteria?

The named-provider evidence applies to BFORT. Marine, specialist and general vacancies require their own instructions.

Is Emotify a personality questionnaire?

Criteria describes it as an ability-based emotional assessment. Illustrait separately concerns behavioral competencies and workplace preferences.

Are the practice games the official ABF assessment?

No. They are independent preparation for the documented formats, and their scores do not establish an ABF result.

Can I use the training duration to estimate selection time?

No. Recruitment, suitability requirements and training have separate schedules. Confirm campaign dates and offer arrangements directly from the official information supplied to you.

What should I prioritize beyond game practice?

Practice extracting facts from text, writing clearly and explaining real behavioral examples. Also check the role’s eligibility and location requirements.
