  2. 2Games for specified early-career routes — Four games take about 15 minutes for the graduate, intern and Finance apprenticeship route.Game evidence
  3. 3Recorded interview and follow-up — Early-career selection includes motivation and behavioral discussion; some routes add technical questions.Tesco interview practice
  4. 4Discovery Centre or role interview — Graduate-style centres and ordinary store interviews are different selection routes.
  5. 5Any further interview, then outcome — Finance early careers adds a face-to-face interview after the centre; follow the chosen program’s instructions.

What to expect in the Tesco assessment

The four-game stage is documented for the early-career route described above. The public information is strongest at category level, so preparation should build comfort with instructions and reasoning rather than rely on a purported exact four-game bundle.

Numerical and abstract reasoning game categories

Category practice

Official source

Tesco describes these categories within its four-game early-career assessment. General number interpretation and pattern reasoning are optional preparation; no named independent simulator is confirmed as the employer’s actual test.

Good to know: The stated 15 minutes is an approximate time to complete the games, not the deadline for opening an invitation. Behavioral preferences are not a subject to memorize. Follow the rules and respond consistently with your own approach.

The Tesco video interview: researched questions

Our Tesco question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

Which Tesco roles and programs does this guide cover?

Tesco is a useful example of why the word assessment needs context. A graduate Discovery Centre, a store scenario exercise and a technical task can all be part of recruitment, but they are not interchangeable stages.

Read the tab or vacancy that matches your application. This guide gives most space to the UK early-career process because it publishes the clearest assessment detail, then explains where store, office and Stronger Starts expectations differ.

Graduates, interns and Finance apprentices

This group has program-specific additions: Technology candidates can receive a technical video; Finance candidates have a face-to-face interview after the Discovery Centre.

Stronger Starts

The separate Stronger Starts tab describes application, video or phone interview, a virtual Discovery Centre and outcome. A phone alternative is available; the games in the other tab should not be added automatically to this route.

Stores, warehouses and distribution

General interview guidance describes in-person interviews of about 30 minutes for these roles. Store applicants may receive role scenarios or an online chat assessment; this is conditional rather than a universal game stage.

Office and technical roles

Office interviews are described as roughly 60–90 minutes, virtually or in person, with possible additional interviews, a prepared task or technical questions. These possibilities depend on the role.

How does the Tesco assessment work?

What the early-career games measure

Official source

Tesco’s employer-authored Bright Network page describes four games taking approximately 15 minutes and covering cognitive ability, behavioral preferences, numerical reasoning and abstract reasoning. It does not name the individual games.

Recorded-interview settings

Official source

The current early-career FAQ gives 30 seconds to prepare and up to three minutes to answer, with an unassessed practice question. Use the actual invitation if its settings differ.

Current guidance says human review

Official source

Both the current Tesco page and its Bright Network process description say team members assess the recorded interviews. Older syndicated wording about AI scoring should not replace the current instructions.

Generic HireVue practice is not a game specification

Official source

The HireVue resource describes a fictitious-company interview for familiarization, not a real employer assessment. It cannot establish an exact Tesco game lineup.

Interview examples focus on behavior

Tesco’s interview guide recommends STAR and provides examples around collaboration, initiative, curiosity and simplifying priorities. Published examples illustrate the style of discussion rather than guaranteeing live questions.

What happens in the Tesco hiring process?

Early-career selection after the games

The official page explains the later selection stages.

  1. 1Successful video candidates have a short motivation phone interview.
  2. 2The centre combines group discussion, an individual business scenario and a motivation interview.
  3. 3Preparation support precedes the centre; outcome feedback follows the final applicable stage.

Ordinary vacancy interviews

The general interview page describes a separate route tailored to the job.

  1. 1Apply online and review any assessment or task instructions supplied.
  2. 2Office interview times are arranged with the recruiting team; other applicants may receive a booking link.
  3. 3Prepare relevant experience from employment, studies, volunteering or hobbies. Different checking requirements by country and role do not imply a common psychometric test.

When is the Tesco assessment?

Tesco’s process pages describe relative stages rather than one live closing date for all candidates.

How to prepare for the Tesco assessment process

Prepare a few strong examples of how you work, then adapt the practice to the program. Tesco’s published interview guide is a useful starting point for understanding the behavioral style.

1. Choose a customer-centered example

As practice, describe a time you identified what someone needed, prioritized competing work and improved the outcome. Make the example specific enough to explain your actions and what changed; it can come from study or volunteering as well as employment.

2. Rehearse a business recommendation

For a Discovery Centre invitation, practice comparing two options using the information provided. State your decision criterion, recognize an uncertainty and suggest what to do next. Avoid trying to dominate a group discussion.

3. Prepare for the function you chose

Technology applicants can revisit technical project decisions and limitations. Finance applicants can practice explaining a calculation and its business meaning. Store applicants should be ready to discuss practical availability and handling varied customer tasks.

4. Make recorded answers complete

Practice a short opening, one example and a clear result. Listen back for a direct answer to the question. This helps a reviewer follow the story when there is no live interviewer to ask for missing context.

Tesco assessment FAQ

Does every Tesco applicant take the four games?

Start with your program’s instructions. Store applicants should prioritize the job’s customer and team situations; early-career applicants should check the relevant program tab.

What are the names of the four Tesco games?

The sources reviewed describe measurement categories without naming four individual games. An exact game lineup would go beyond that evidence.

Are Tesco recorded interviews scored by AI?

Current Tesco guidance says a team member assesses the videos. Older syndicated descriptions differ and should not override the live employer page.

How can I prepare for a Discovery Centre?

Practice discussing a business problem, making a recommendation and explaining your motivation. Use the employer’s preparation materials to plan for your actual invitation.

How should store applicants prepare?

Focus on role situations, customer service, teamwork and practical availability. A graduate Discovery Centre guide is not a reliable prediction of an ordinary store interview.
