The Westpac hiring process at a glance

  1. 1Application — Australian graduate applicants submit their details and stream preferences.
  2. 2Online assessment — Shortlisted candidates complete psychometric testing by the invitation deadline.
  3. 3Recorded interview — Prepare a concise account of your motivation.Interview practice Reported video questions
  4. 4Final selection — Australian graduate assessment centres include interview and case work; New Zealand differs.

What to expect in the Westpac assessment

Psychometric testing is officially confirmed for Australian graduate selection. A historical Westpac PDF describes games, but current evidence is insufficient to attach a named simulator set to the employer.

Good to know: Do not substitute the timings in the older 2022 PDF for your current invitation. The linked interview resources support rehearsal and do not establish a current universal HireVue supplier.

The Westpac video interview: researched questions

Our Westpac question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

Which Westpac roles and programs does this guide cover?

Westpac applicants should first identify their country, stream and career level. The graduate guidance is more specific than the general recruitment page, and the Australian and New Zealand programs do not use interchangeable instructions.

The practical priority is to prepare before submitting if the process may quickly lead to an assessment. Save your application, confirm that the chosen location works for you, and monitor the email address you used. The completion windows below are invitation deadlines, not the amount of time spent taking a test.

Australian graduates and summer interns

The Australian hub describes application, psychometric assessment, video interview and assessment centre. Most centres are virtual, with some in person; the invitation determines attendance arrangements.

New Zealand graduates

The local application asks for a CV, cover letter and transcript. Later stages include online assessment, one-way video, online or in-person interviews and a virtual Introduction to Westpac session.

Experienced and general recruitment

The general Australian process uses conditional language: online testing, recorded video or a phone screen can depend on the role. Hiring-manager interviews or assessment centres may follow, so the graduate sequence should not be applied to every vacancy.

How does the Westpac assessment work?

Australian assessment-centre content

Official source

The dedicated graduate application page names a behavioral interview and a business-related case study. It does not establish that every centre includes a group task or the same technical exercise.

Recordings require advance preparation

Official source

The Australian graduate guidance describes a short motivational recording and says it cannot be paused, stopped or restarted. Prepare the environment before beginning and follow the current platform instructions.

Historical games are not a current specification

Official source

An official instructions PDF labeled for 2022 graduates describes gamified cognitive and emotional-intelligence assessments. It does not confirm that the same suite is used for the current intake or identify individual game titles.

Assessment provider and test scores

No evidence found

Current pages reviewed do not establish a universal assessment vendor, published pass mark or fixed test duration. A background-check company named in recruitment guidance is not evidence of the psychometric supplier.

How to prepare for the Westpac assessment process

Prepare against the work of your preferred stream as well as the selection format. The following are practice exercises, not promised interview questions.

1. Support your stream preferences

Write a brief reason for each preference using the actual work described. For example, the New Zealand program listings distinguish customer-financing and credit work from transaction banking, markets and technology pathways. Avoid submitting three unrelated preferences without a common motivation.

2. Practice a banking case aloud

Take a hypothetical customer or business problem. Define the objective, compare two options, consider feasibility and risk, and recommend a next step. Explain what extra information you would need rather than filling gaps with invented facts.

3. Make a technical project relevant

For an Australian AI Science application, rehearse explaining a model choice, evaluation and limitations. For AI Digital, explain a customer journey or product decision. These suggestions reflect the stream’s published focus; they do not establish a coding or design test.

4. Prepare behavioral evidence

Choose an example of resolving disagreement, learning a new task and improving a customer outcome. Explain your action and result clearly enough that someone outside your subject can follow it.

5. Check the recording setup early

Test sound and framing, silence notifications and practice answering without reading a script. Keep the invitation deadline, time zone and support instructions available before starting.

Westpac assessment FAQ

Does Westpac use games?

An older official 2022 graduate document describes games. Current Australian pages confirm psychometric testing without confirming that old game suite or a current named lineup.

Are assessment centres always virtual?

No. The Australian hub says most are virtual but some are in person. Follow the invitation, including any country-specific arrangements.

What does the 48-hour window mean?

It can be the Australian deadline to complete an invited assessment. It is not a 48-hour test duration. New Zealand guidance instead mentions invitations with as little as 72 hours.

What should I prepare for the Australian graduate centre?

The dedicated process page names a behavioral interview and business-related case study. Prepare examples and structured reasoning, then follow the exercise briefing.

Is the New Zealand process identical?

No. New Zealand has separate application documents, invitation timing and final-stage guidance. Do not import Australian exercise details into a New Zealand invitation.
