What to expect in the Walmart assessment

Do not translate “online assessment” into a fixed set of memory games. The clearest retail evidence concerns work situations and job tasks. The documented formats below are useful preparation categories, with their age and scope stated explicitly.

Retail workplace judgment

Category practice

Single source

Upturn observed candidates choosing their most and least likely responses to retail situations. As general preparation, compare actions for usefulness, respect, practicality, and appropriate escalation; do not memorize an alleged answer pattern.

Cash and change calculation

Category practice

Single source

The same historical study observed a cash-handling exercise. Practice calculating change and checking denominations if your role involves transactions. There is no basis here to promise this task for every current retail vacancy.

Coding and technical explanation

Category practice

Anecdotal

Recent Global Tech internship accounts mention programming, SQL, complexity, and project discussion. Use the skills in your vacancy to select exercises, and practice explaining choices as you solve them. These reports do not establish a universal coding platform.

Good to know: A retail simulation, a recorded interview, and a live coding discussion require different preparation. Use any Walmart interview practice as rehearsal; it does not establish that your invitation includes video recording or any particular question.

The Walmart video interview: researched questions

Our Walmart question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

  1. 1Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer or went above and beyond for one.Reported by multiple candidates
  2. 2Tell me about a time you handled a conflict or a difficult coworker.Reported by multiple candidates
  3. 3How do you prioritise when you are busy or under pressure?Reported by multiple candidates

Which Walmart roles and programs does this guide cover?

A Walmart assessment guide is useful only after you identify the vacancy. A cashier, maintenance technician, software engineering intern, and commercial analyst should not assume that they face the same exercises. Match the assessment title in your account to the job you selected before spending time on a particular practice format.

Stores, clubs, supply chain, and specialist roles

Walmart’s careers overview separates stores and clubs, supply chain and transportation, healthcare, technology, and corporate opportunities. Search by the actual function and location; a company-wide label does not establish one selection route.

Global Tech software engineering internships

Accounts posted in March, August, and September 2026 describe different engineering experiences: assessment review and project discussion, technical and behavioral meetings, and coding or SQL. These are candidate observations, not an official sequence for every team or intake.

How does the Walmart assessment work?

Allow separate time for assessment

Official source

The US hiring FAQ estimates 20–25 minutes for a first application, with extra time for any required assessments. That estimate is not a test duration.

Retail vendor evidence is scoped

Single source

A syndicated HireVue customer case identifies a custom Walmart Retail Associate Assessment using Virtual Job Tryout. It supports a documented retail relationship, not a current company-wide video-interview or games requirement.

Observed retail task families

Single source

Upturn’s 2021 original research observed workplace scenarios, a change-counting simulation, and paired work-style statements in Walmart’s hiring flow. Treat these as historical format evidence rather than a guaranteed current lineup.

Completion and adjustment support

Official source

Walmart says a confirmation screen appears after the application and required assessments are complete. Its FAQ also directs candidates who need an accommodation to the recruiting team.

No verified universal scoring rule

No evidence found

The reviewed public guidance does not establish a Walmart-wide passing percentage, retake interval, number of questions, or recorded-answer timer. Check the rules displayed for your assigned activity.

What happens in the Walmart hiring process?

What Walmart’s published application guidance establishes

The official overview supports an application-and-review path while leaving interview details to the role.

  1. 1Find the right opening and read its description before applying.
  2. 2Review your information before submission; Walmart says submitted applications cannot be edited.
  3. 3Use your candidate account to follow application status and check recruitment emails.
  4. 4Prepare examples using the STAR structure, which Walmart recommends in its interview advice.

When is the Walmart assessment?

Vacancy closing dates, application retention, assessment expiry, and response time are different clocks. Record each one separately.

CycleApplication datesLikely assessment windowEvidence
US applicationsVacancy-specific; use the advertised closing dateUse the invitation or candidate accountOfficial source

Walmart aims to respond within a week, but says role and location can change the timing. Hourly applications remain in its system for 60 days; that retention period is not permission to delay an assessment.

How to prepare for the Walmart assessment process

Build preparation around the actual work. The following are suggested exercises, not leaked questions or a claim about Walmart’s scoring model. Choose the ones that match the role and the assessment instructions you receive.

1. Translate the vacancy into evidence

Make a two-column note: each important responsibility on the left, one example of doing comparable work on the right. For a first job, examples can come from school, volunteering, caring responsibilities, or team activities. Describe what you personally did and the result, rather than only naming a personal quality.

2. Practice realistic retail decisions

Work through an invented busy-shift scenario with a waiting customer, a task deadline, and a colleague needing help. Explain what you would clarify, prioritize, handle yourself, and escalate. Look for solutions that actually resolve the issue within your authority. This is a reasoning exercise, not an answer key.

3. Show your technical decisions

For a software vacancy, rehearse one project from problem definition through testing. Explain a bug, the alternatives you considered, and a tradeoff you would change today. Then solve a small coding or database problem aloud, checking assumptions and edge cases before optimizing. Use the language and domain relevant to your role.

4. Prepare an honest working agreement

Have accurate employment dates, availability, location preferences, and examples ready before applying. For interviews, prepare a concise explanation of why this particular job fits your skills and circumstances. A realistic answer about the work is more useful than a broad statement about wanting to join a large company.

Walmart assessment FAQ

Does every Walmart applicant take HireVue games?

No published evidence establishes that. Retail vendor case material concerns a custom Virtual Job Tryout; that is not a universal games lineup. Prepare for the assessment named in your own invitation.

Is the assessment a video interview?

Not necessarily. A job simulation or work-style questionnaire is different from recording answers. Your invitation should state what you must complete.

How should I prepare for a Global Tech interview?

Recent internship accounts support practicing coding, project explanation, and behavioral examples. Select topics from the job description and confirm the meeting format because candidate experiences differ.

Can I use this guide for Walmart Canada or India?

Use its preparation principles, but do not transfer the US application rules or retail test observations automatically. A local vacancy and invitation are the appropriate sources for your process.
