What to expect in the S&P Global assessment

A confirmed assessment provider does not identify every test product used for every job. The directly named Global Skills Assessment should not be replaced in your preparation plan with an assumed battery of memory games or numerical tests.

Good to know: Read the exact product label and candidate instructions before selecting practice. The linked interview resources are preparation aids based on reported themes; they do not guarantee a current HireVue stage.

The S&P Global video interview: researched questions

Our S&P Global question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

Which S&P Global roles and programs does this guide cover?

Begin by distinguishing the employer from its individual businesses and programs. Preparing for credit analysis requires a different technical discussion from preparing for a data platform or an editorial role. Use the responsibilities in the vacancy to decide which knowledge to revise.

There are several kinds of evidence behind online accounts of S&P Global hiring: a general corporate journey, a recent assessment-vendor case study, and dated reports from individual programs. These sources can all be useful without describing an identical process. The strongest preparation plan follows the current invitation and uses older reports as context.

General candidate journey

S&P Global’s published diagram includes recruiter and hiring-manager screening, interviews with the team, a finalist decision, and background/reference checks. It expressly indicates that steps depend on the position.

Ratings Forward is an event application

The September 2026 London Ratings event advert asks shortlisted applicants to complete a brief online assessment. Successful event applicants may later apply for 2027 internship and graduate opportunities; admission to the event is not a job offer.

How does the S&P Global assessment work?

If your invitation names Global Skills Assessment

Official source

SHL describes GSA as comparing short behavioral statements and choosing those most like you. It is a workplace-behavior assessment, not evidence of a required numerical-reasoning test. Check that this is the product named in your invitation.

Historical HireVue evidence is program-specific

Anecdotal

A Houston Commodity Associate applicant interviewed in November 2018 reported a HireVue round, recruiter call and subsequent office-based skills exercises. The age and location of the account limit its predictive value for current applicants.

Interview recording is not proof of an asynchronous screen

Official source

S&P Global’s candidate privacy notice allows interviews to be recorded or transcribed where applicable. That does not establish that every applicant receives a prerecorded HireVue interview.

What happens in the S&P Global hiring process?

How to read the published candidate journey

The corporate diagram provides a broad recruiting framework rather than a program-specific test schedule.

  1. 1An application is submitted and a recruiter may screen the candidate.
  2. 2The hiring manager reviews candidates and may conduct a further screening conversation.
  3. 3An interview team meets candidates, reviews feedback and identifies a finalist.
  4. 4The journey includes reference/background checks and an offer; role and local requirements determine the details.

What the older Platts account adds

This November 2018 Houston account illustrates the breadth a role-specific process can have.

  1. 1The applicant described a recorded introduction and motivation discussion.
  2. 2Later exercises combined quantitative, editorial and qualitative work.
  3. 3Treat those as historical format clues, then confirm the requirements of a present-day commodity or editorial vacancy.

When is the S&P Global assessment?

A recruiting event deadline, a job closing date and an assessment expiry are separate. Only the first is specified in the event example below.

How to prepare for the S&P Global assessment process

Prepare to explain how you turn information into a reliable conclusion. The exercises below are independent practice suggestions for the work implied by a chosen role.

1. Build a division-specific motivation answer

Explain which output interests you: a credit opinion, a benchmark, commodity information, client support or a technology product. Connect that output to a project or learning experience instead of describing S&P Global only as a large financial company.

2. Practice a short evidence-based briefing

Choose a public company or market development. State what changed, identify two useful data points and explain an uncertainty. For a Ratings application, consider implications for the issuer’s capacity to service debt; for a commodity role, distinguish supply, demand and price effects.

3. Prepare technical depth at the right level

Use the vacancy’s skills to choose revision. Explain an analysis, a spreadsheet, a software decision or a piece of writing from your own work. Be ready to discuss how you checked accuracy and what you would improve.

4. Keep behavioral examples concrete

Prepare examples of a disputed conclusion, a tight deadline and learning unfamiliar material. Show how you gathered evidence, worked with others and communicated a decision without overstating certainty.

S&P Global assessment FAQ

Does S&P Global use SHL?

Yes. SHL publishes a substantive customer story confirming the relationship and naming Global Skills Assessment. Your invitation determines which assessment applies to your role.

Is HireVue always the first round?

That is not established. Historical early-career candidates have reported HireVue, while the general corporate journey includes recruiter and hiring-manager conversations.

Should I practice SHL numerical reasoning automatically?

No particular numerical module follows from the vendor relationship alone. Match practice to the product or format in your assessment invitation.

Does passing the Ratings Forward assessment mean a job offer?

No. The verified September 2026 London listing concerns selection for a recruiting event, after which attendees may apply for relevant opportunities.

What is the most useful interview preparation?

Understand the chosen division’s output and rehearse explaining your own analysis or project clearly. Keep supporting evidence and limitations visible.
