What to expect in the MinterEllison assessment

HireVue game-based assessment is confirmed. The useful preparation match is the broader cognitive-game category; the employer has not supplied names allowing an exact simulator mapping.

Good to know: The published ten-minute estimate covers the games. It should not be confused with the video estimate, the time allowed for an individual response or the deadline in the invitation.

The MinterEllison video interview: researched questions

Our MinterEllison question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

  1. 1Tell us three interesting things about yourself that are not on your CV.Officially published
  2. 2Describe a particular legal case or topic that sparked your interest either before or during your studies, and briefly explain why.Officially published

Which MinterEllison roles and programs does this guide cover?

Choose the programme and office before preparing. MinterEllison’s legal clerkships, graduate opportunities and technology-consulting pathway have distinct eligibility and availability. This guide covers Australian early careers, not every experienced legal or consulting vacancy.

The games, recorded responses and interviews provide different evidence. Prepare your reasoning and communication separately, and use the office calendar to establish whether the current application round has already closed.

Legal clerkships and graduate entry

Clerkships are designed principally for penultimate- or final-year law students. Most legal graduates previously completed a firm clerkship; direct graduate vacancies appear only when available. The graduate programme can include up to three six-month rotations.

Technology consulting

The consulting programme concerns technology decisions, sourcing and delivery. Its published eligibility includes Australian citizenship and eligibility for government security clearance, alongside a range of relevant degree disciplines. Do not transfer those requirements to legal clerkships.

Earlier student engagement

Discover ME is an in-person introduction for pre-penultimate students in selected offices, while Meet ME provides webinars. These are exploratory programmes rather than evidence of an identical clerkship selection sequence.

How does the MinterEllison assessment work?

What the games assess

Official source

The firm describes cognitive reasoning, mental agility, visual-spatial awareness and emotional intelligence. HireVue sends the invitation within 24–48 hours after application; that is an invitation-arrival estimate, not the completion deadline.

Video re-recording

Official source

The process page allows one re-recording per response, without choosing between the two recordings. Read the actual invitation before relying on this policy for your programme.

Video answer preparation

Official source

The firm’s video advice suggests roughly two minutes per answer and says Talent reviews the submission. Use practice prompts to check delivery, lighting and audio before beginning.

Interview evidence

Official source

The firm encourages specific examples, self-awareness and discussion of non-legal experience. Prepare the contribution you personally made and what changed as a result, rather than listing tasks.

How to prepare for the MinterEllison assessment process

These exercises build relevant habits without assuming access to actual assessment questions.

1. Develop a commercial view of one legal issue

Pick a public legal development you find interesting. Explain the affected client, the practical business consequences and what information an adviser would need. Keep legal detail accurate and distinguish facts from your interpretation.

2. Connect interests to the chosen office

Identify two practice areas that interest you and explain why. Use real work or study examples to show the skills you want to develop, rather than repeating a firm description.

3. Record a concise example

Choose a teamwork or service situation and deliver a short response with a clear action and result. Review whether the listener can tell what you contributed. Practice natural delivery without memorizing a script.

4. Compare legal and consulting motivations

If applying to consulting, practice turning a technology problem into a client decision: requirements, options, risks and recommendation. For law, focus on judgment, communication and commercial implications.

MinterEllison assessment FAQ

Is HireVue confirmed for MinterEllison?

Yes. The Australian early-careers process explicitly names HireVue for psychometric assessment invitations.

Which games should I expect?

The employer identifies capability areas but not individual titles. Treat provider-level practice as familiarization, not an exact lineup.

Can I apply to multiple clerkship offices?

The process page permits one MinterEllison clerkship office per year. Choose based on where you would want to work as a graduate.

Are direct graduate applications always available?

No. The programme page says most legal graduates come through clerkships; direct applications are possible when graduate vacancies are advertised.

Does consulting have the same eligibility as law?

No. The technology-consulting description includes citizenship and clearance eligibility requirements that should not be treated as universal legal-clerkship rules.
