What to expect in the BP assessment

BP describes online exercises that may involve numerical, logical or situational reasoning. The useful preparation target is the named skill in your invitation. The numerical practice below is an optional skill comparison, not a claim that BP uses SHL.

Numerical reasoning exercises

Category practice

Official source

BP lists numerical exercises among possible online assessments. If your invitation confirms this format, practice reading tables, percentages and ratios. The linked SHL-style material is category practice only; BP’s test provider and exact interface remain unconfirmed.

Good to know: Start with the practice examples in your actual assessment portal. Do not treat a game name or a test vendor from an older candidate account as a guaranteed part of your application.

Which BP roles and programs does this guide cover?

Begin by identifying the BP business, location and job family on your vacancy. A supply, trading and shipping application needs a different preparation emphasis from engineering or a specialist professional position. The graduate overview is a useful map, but the specific assessment invitation tells you which parts apply.

This guide separates a confirmed video platform from test content. A HireVue invitation for recorded answers does not establish that you will receive HireVue games. Prepare for the format BP actually names, then build evidence of how you solve problems and work with others.

Graduate programs

BP’s graduate page covers business, digital, engineering, science and supply, trading and shipping, with country-specific opportunities. Its five-stage overview includes online screening and assessments, recorded responses, technical interviewing and an assessment center.

Internships

The internship site also organizes opportunities by discipline and country and uses a candidate matching tool. Select the appropriate education and location details; the existence of an internship in one market does not establish availability elsewhere.

Experienced and specialist roles

The general process starts with application review and an initial conversation, followed by interviews and any relevant assessment. BP identifies technical tasks, case studies and working-style questionnaires as possible variations.

How does the BP assessment work?

HireVue is confirmed for video

Official source

The early-careers FAQ names HireVue for on-demand interviews. It separately directs candidates to their assessment dashboard for practice tests; it does not identify a single provider for all online tests.

Competency evidence matters

Official source

BP’s interview guide describes structured competency questions and recommends STAR. Interviewers want the reasoning behind your actions as well as the outcome, so make your own contribution clear.

Preparation should reflect the culture

Official source

BP’s published beliefs emphasize safety, accountability, improvement and care for colleagues and customers. These give useful context when choosing examples of judgment, teamwork and learning.

Game names and pass marks are unconfirmed

No evidence found

The current sources reviewed do not establish a common game lineup, numerical pass mark or universal test duration. This is a limit of the published evidence, not proof that a particular vacancy has no test.

What happens in the BP hiring process?

How to use the graduate journey

BP’s graduate overview supplies the broad order; your invitation supplies the detail.

  1. 1Check the entry requirements and submit your application and CV.
  2. 2Complete the invited online assessments, then the recorded-interview stage.
  3. 3Prepare discipline-relevant explanations for the technical interview.
  4. 4Follow the assessment-center instructions and wait for the recruitment decision.

Preparing for the interview formats

BP distinguishes on-demand recordings from live interviews.

  1. 1For a recording, follow the response limits shown in the invitation and test your camera and microphone.
  2. 2For a live discussion, prepare for follow-up questions about your decisions and results.
  3. 3Use concise context, specific actions and a clear outcome; explain what you learned.

When is the BP assessment?

Separate the date an opportunity opens from its closing date and the deadline on an assessment invitation. They are different milestones.

CycleApplication datesLikely assessment windowEvidence
Graduate and internship page announcementApplications advertised to open October 14, 2026Issued separately to invited candidatesOfficial source

At review, BP’s graduate and internship pages advertised this opening date. Confirm the selected country and vacancy before relying on it; it is not a universal assessment date or a guarantee that every discipline will open.

BP says opportunities may fill before their stated closing date. Its FAQ permits one early-careers application globally per academic year and says unsuccessful applicants must wait until the next academic year to reapply.

How to prepare for the BP assessment process

Use the following as a preparation plan, not a prediction of interview questions. Focus first on the stage you have been invited to complete.

1. Build a role-specific evidence sheet

Take the vacancy’s main requirements and attach one real example to each. For engineering, explain a technical constraint and how you checked your solution. For trading or commercial roles, explain a decision under uncertainty. For digital work, show how you measured whether an implementation worked.

2. Refresh the skills named in the invitation

For numerical exercises, practice extracting the correct units and denominators before calculating. For situational questions, identify the objective, affected people and available information before comparing responses. Use short practice sessions and review errors instead of repeating an unknown test format.

3. Make safety and accountability concrete

Choose an example where you noticed a risk, owned an error or raised a concern constructively. Explain the practical action and its effect. A modest example with clear judgment is stronger than a large project described only in generalities.

4. Rehearse explanations out loud

Record a practice answer about a project and listen for missing context, vague references to “we” and an unclear result. For technical preparation, work through a representative problem and state assumptions, tradeoffs and checks. These are practice activities, not claimed BP questions.

BP assessment FAQ

Does BP use HireVue games?

BP confirms HireVue for some early-careers recorded interviews. The current official material reviewed does not confirm a HireVue game lineup. Check the separate assessment instructions before choosing game practice.

Will every BP role have an assessment center?

No single format applies to all roles. It appears in the published graduate journey, while the general application guidance describes role-dependent variations. Your recruiter’s instructions establish your stages.

Can I apply to several BP graduate roles?

The early-careers FAQ allows one opportunity globally per academic year, with only the first application processed. Compare the eligibility requirements and location carefully before submitting.

What should I prioritize for a technical interview?

Prepare to explain the fundamentals relevant to the vacancy and a project you know well. Show your assumptions, reasoning and verification. The graduate overview confirms the stage but does not publish a universal question bank.
