What to know about skin care, hair removal and makeup

  1. A basic facial cleanses, analyzes, exfoliates, steams, extracts if needed, massages, masks and protects. Analyze the skin before you choose products.
  2. Contraindications for facials and waxing include contagious conditions, open sores, recent chemical peels or laser treatments, and use of retinoids or other skin-thinning medication. Ask before every service.
  3. Massage movements: effleurage is light, gliding stroking; petrissage is kneading; friction is rubbing; tapotement is tapping or percussion; vibration is shaking.
  4. Soft wax is removed with a strip, quickly and against the direction of hair growth after applying with the growth; hard wax hardens on the skin and is removed without a strip. Hold the skin taut when removing either kind.
  5. Galvanic current is direct current. Desincrustation uses the negative pole to soften sebum; iontophoresis drives water-soluble products into the skin. High-frequency current is alternating current used for its germicidal, warming effect.
  6. Tweezing and waxing remove hair temporarily; electrolysis is the permanent method, done by licensed electrologists. A depilatory dissolves hair at the skin surface.
  7. Makeup: choose foundation by matching on the jawline; concealer hides discoloration; highlighting brings features forward and contouring with a darker shade makes them recede.
  8. Never use a product from a container on more than one client: use a spatula and single-use applicators.
