This guide focuses on London early careers. Experienced lawyers, business-services applicants and candidates in other countries should use their own local recruitment guidance.
Selection for a vacation scheme and selection for a training contract are separate decisions. Check which decision your next exercise supports.
The London application page says applicants can choose a vacation scheme or direct training contract in the same recruitment cycle, not both. It reports that approximately 80% of London trainees are recruited through vacation schemes.

This six-year degree apprenticeship combines work and legal study. Its dedicated page sets out a separate recruitment sequence, including a telephone conversation and an assessment day; do not replace that sequence with vacation-scheme advice.
The Australian careers page says most graduate roles are filled through vacation clerkships in Melbourne and Sydney. It invites eligible law students studying in Australia and directs them to local application information. London dates and formats should not be transferred to this route.

In a published interview, Early Careers Legal Recruitment Advisor Anna Gould names Capptivate as the skills-based online assessment after the vacation-scheme application. This is direct recruiter evidence for that pathway, not a universal vendor policy.
The firm says the recorded interview has three questions and provides a practice question. For each answer, its apprenticeship page explicitly gives two minutes for preparation and recording together. Do not assume an additional two minutes for preparation.
The UK assessment page identifies Rare Recruitment’s contextual system and lets applicants note reasonable adjustments on their form. Rare is identified for application context, not as proof of which cognitive test is used.
The reviewed guidance does not publish a single employer-wide game battery, pass mark or retake policy. Descriptions of a commercial or analytical exercise are not enough to identify it as Watson–Glaser.

The firm’s recruiter describes the following route in a published interview.
The apprenticeship page publishes its own stages.
As reviewed on 14 September 2026, the official pages describe an autumn reopening and distinguish programme starts from application dates.
| Cycle | Application dates | Likely assessment window | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| London vacation schemes | Reopening in autumn 2026; exact dates to be confirmed | Invitation-specific | Official source The winter, spring and summer scheme listings say applications are closed and will reopen in autumn 2026. Scheme dates remain unconfirmed on the page. Source: White & Case: Vacation schemes |
| Direct training contracts | Reopening in autumn 2026 | Invitation-specific | Official source The training-contract page refers to September 2029 and March 2030 starts. Those are joining dates, not application deadlines. Source: White & Case: Training contracts |
| Solicitor apprenticeship | Reopening in autumn 2026 | Invitation-specific | Official source The apprenticeship page identifies a September 2027 start. Check its live update before submitting. |
Practice explaining your reasoning and interest in the work. These exercises are preparation suggestions.
Choose a recent cross-border transaction or dispute. Identify who needs advice, their objective, the commercial risk and one question a lawyer would need answered. Distinguish the facts you know from assumptions.
Practice taking a short pause, selecting a clear example and finishing the answer without rushing. Give the listener your own action and result. A simple structure will be easier to deliver naturally than a script.
Read a business article and write a concise note with the issue, evidence, options and recommendation. Then remove unsupported assertions and check whether someone unfamiliar with the subject can follow it.
For the vacation scheme, explain what you want to learn from client work and practice-area exposure. For the apprenticeship, be ready to discuss combining work with sustained study. Use examples that genuinely demonstrate how you learn and collaborate.
The vacation-scheme recruiter names Capptivate. The sources reviewed do not justify calling it an official Watson–Glaser test.
The published UK guidance says three. The apprenticeship page makes clear that each two-minute window covers preparation and recording together.
The London application page says to choose one in the same recruitment cycle.
No. Selection continues during the scheme. The scheme page says there is no fixed limit on training-contract offers per scheme, so it is not simply a competition for a preset number of places.
The reviewed pages promise an autumn reopening but do not give exact new closing dates. Check the current programme page before planning an application.
