What to expect in the Standard Chartered assessment

The current first-stage guidance describes behavioural choices and reasoning tasks. Preparation should match those formats rather than assume that an older game list applies.

General ability reasoning

Closest practice only

Official source

Standard Chartered recommends SHL’s interactive general-ability practice. Our independent practice covers the same broad deductive, inductive and numerical categories; it does not reproduce the employer’s questions.

Good to know: A practice score is not a hiring threshold. Use errors to identify weak reasoning habits, and use the actual invitation to confirm the assessment you have been assigned.

Which Standard Chartered roles and programs does this guide cover?

Check the assessment name in your invitation before choosing practice. Current early-careers guidance differs from older pages still available online, and technology candidates may follow a programme-specific route.

Divide preparation between reasoning, explaining decisions and the technical skills required by your vacancy.

Current early-careers route

The application hub lists Skills Insight, technology-role coding, Workplace Scenarios, assessment centre and offer. It explicitly allows differences between programmes and markets.

India technology route

The detailed coding page addresses India technology candidates who passed Skills Insight and describes assessment centre as the next final stage. This differs from the general route containing Workplace Scenarios.

Experienced professionals

Experienced-hire guidance includes Valued Behaviours Assessment after screening, then interview and selection. This is distinct from early-careers recruitment.

How does the Standard Chartered assessment work?

Skills Insight timing and provider

Official source

The FAQ identifies SHL. Allow about an hour overall: behavioural questions are untimed, typically 15–20 minutes; reasoning takes 36 minutes and must be completed in one sitting.

Programming assessment

Official source

The FAQ describes two coding problems and a 45–85-minute duration depending on role. Data-science candidates also receive foundational multiple-choice questions.

Recorded-response structure

Official source

Workplace Scenarios contains four scenarios. Allow 20 minutes, with one minute to prepare and two minutes to record each answer. Staff evaluate the responses; AI does not score them.

Older guidance requires care

Estimate / inference

A still-live VBA page describes Pymetrics and an older sequence. It conflicts with the current early-careers hub; treat it as historical or route-specific guidance rather than a universal current requirement.

What happens in the Standard Chartered hiring process?

What happens inside Skills Insight

The current assessment page explains the change of task between its two elements.

  1. 1Select the behavioural descriptions that best represent your usual approach.
  2. 2Then analyse information, recognise patterns and sequences, calculate and draw logical conclusions.
  3. 3After completion, expect a personal report and a review against the role.

Preparing for Workplace Scenarios

This stage explores motivation and skills relevant to an early-careers position.

  1. 1Review the job advert and identify the skills you need to demonstrate.
  2. 2Connect those requirements with examples from your experience and a clear explanation of why the career interests you.
  3. 3After submission, the recruitment team reviews the whole application; a response can take several weeks.

A separate experienced-hire process

Experienced candidates should prepare for the vacancy’s own assessment and interview instructions.

  1. 1The published sequence includes application, screening, online assessment, interview and selection.
  2. 2The interview uses skills and competency questions; additional job-related assessments may be requested.

How to prepare for the Standard Chartered assessment process

These are suggested preparation exercises, not reported questions.

1. Separate calculation from interpretation

From a financial table, explain both what the arithmetic shows and what decision it supports. Check units, denominators and periods first. Classify mistakes as reading, method or execution errors before practicing again.

2. Practice competing priorities

Consider a customer deadline with incomplete information. Explain what you would verify, who needs to know and how you would communicate uncertainty. Establish the facts before committing to a decision.

3. Make international examples precise

For a role spanning markets, explain a project without local jargon. State the goal, constraints and your contribution. Describe how you checked understanding rather than assuming others shared your context.

4. Test technical edge cases

Solve an unfamiliar coding problem, then test empty inputs, duplicates and unexpected sizes. Explain the trade-off between simplicity and speed. For data work, describe what the output can and cannot establish.

5. Review recordings for substance

Record a decision made under uncertainty. Listen for a clear action, reason and outcome. Remove background that does not help someone assess your judgment, while preserving necessary context.

Standard Chartered assessment FAQ

Does Standard Chartered still use Pymetrics?

Older pages mention Pymetrics; the current early-careers hub names Skills Insight. Prepare for the assessment specified in your invitation.

Who supplies Skills Insight?

The early-careers FAQ identifies SHL for Skills Insight. It does not establish a universal provider across the bank.

Will every technology applicant record a video interview?

Not necessarily. The general route includes Workplace Scenarios; India coding guidance describes progression to assessment centre.

Can I record a Workplace Scenarios answer again?

The FAQ permits one re-record for each answer; the second attempt must be submitted.

Is Valued Behaviours Assessment only outdated terminology?

No. Experienced-hire guidance still includes VBA. The programme and hiring category matter.
