What to expect in the Mastercard assessment

The documented assessment formats are interviews and work-related exercises. This guide does not assign an unrelated game simulator to Mastercard’s technical, product or consulting assessments.

Good to know: Treat an independently written mock interview as rehearsal. It is not a preview of your live questions, and the existence of a practice page does not prove a particular assessment platform is used.

The Mastercard video interview: researched questions

Our Mastercard question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

  1. 1What is an example of when you've had to face a difficult challenge or solve a tough problem? How did you solve this and what did you learn along the way?Officially published
  2. 2Think about a time when you've had an important idea you wanted to share and communicate. How did you get your message across to your audience?Officially published
  3. 3Think about some of the relationships you have with fellow students, mentors, professors, or colleagues — what do you do to make those relationships work, and what makes them challenging?Officially published

Which Mastercard roles and programs does this guide cover?

Start with the function on your vacancy. A Mastercard consulting interview, a product design discussion and an engineering interview test different ways of solving problems. Preparing the same set of aptitude games for all three would leave important work uncovered.

The strongest public evidence is Mastercard’s own interview guidance and linked preparation documents. Those resources explain what candidates should demonstrate; they do not establish a single worldwide online test, fixed question list or common passing score.

Launch graduate program

Launch combines a permanent full-time job with an 18-month development program for recent or upcoming Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. Technology, consulting, product and sales are among the pathways, so the program label alone does not determine the interview exercise.

Internships

Mastercard’s internship page describes opportunities across software engineering, data, cybersecurity, consulting, finance, marketing and other functions. It asks candidates to check role-specific qualifications. Use the job’s responsibilities to decide which projects and skills to highlight.

Mastercard’s general hiring sequence

The careers FAQ gives a global guideline, with variation by location and role.

  1. 1After application, an introductory recruiter conversation leads into a hiring-manager interview.
  2. 2Team interviews follow, before a final selection decision and offer.
  3. 3Ask which role-specific exercise accompanies your invitation and use that brief to organize preparation.

How to approach the product exercise

The linked official product guide gives a practical structure for a design or critique conversation.

  1. 1Clarify the objective and communicate how you plan to break down the problem.
  2. 2Identify the intended users and prioritize their needs before proposing features.
  3. 3Explain trade-offs and adapt your proposal when the interviewer adds information. These are preparation principles, not a scripted answer.

How to prepare for the Mastercard assessment process

Build preparation around one role and a small number of detailed examples. You should be able to explain the problem, what you personally did, the alternatives you considered and the result.

For a useful self-check, give the same project explanation twice: once to a specialist and once to someone outside your field. Both versions should preserve the decision and its business consequence.

1. Connect your examples to the published skills

Mastercard identifies curiosity, collaboration, adaptability, integrity, critical thinking and growth. Select true examples where those qualities changed your actions. Include a mistake or revision so the account shows learning, rather than only a polished outcome.

2. Choose a role-specific rehearsal

For engineering, work through a problem aloud and explain edge cases. For product, design an improvement around one user need and a measurable outcome. For consulting, diagnose a business problem before calculating an answer. These are suggested exercises, not reported questions.

3. Practice commercial reasoning for consulting

Use an invented scenario such as a merchant deciding whether to introduce a new service. Separate demand, price, cost and implementation risks; estimate the break-even point and state your assumptions. Conclude with a recommendation and one piece of missing evidence.

4. Make your motivation concrete

Prepare a short explanation linking the advertised work to a project you enjoyed and a skill you want to deepen. A specific connection to the team is more useful than describing Mastercard only as a well-known brand.

Mastercard assessment FAQ

Does Mastercard use HireVue games?

The official sources reviewed do not establish a standard HireVue game stage. Check the provider and exercise named in your invitation; software used for one hiring route would not establish the process for every role.

Will a Mastercard consulting interview include a case?

Mastercard’s interview guidance explicitly describes consulting case interviews. Practice framing a business problem, interpreting numbers and making an evidence-based recommendation.

What is different about product interviews?

The official product guide focuses on understanding users, prioritizing their needs and explaining design decisions. Practice responding to new constraints rather than memorizing a feature checklist.

Is Launch a separate temporary internship?

No. Mastercard describes Launch as graduate development alongside a permanent full-time role. Its internship program is a different entry route.

What should I prioritize if preparation time is short?

Read the exact vacancy and assessment brief, rehearse your two strongest relevant projects, and complete one role-matched exercise. Review where your explanation becomes vague or omits your own contribution.
