What to expect in the Los Angeles County assessment

Prepare for the named examination components instead of looking for a universal County game lineup. The County's own preparation series is the first reference; the practice links below provide supplementary category practice.

Good to know: Neither GovernmentJobs nor the SHL practice link establishes one vendor for every County role. Get test content, scoring weights, time limits and allowed materials from your bulletin and instructions.

Which Los Angeles County roles and programs does this guide cover?

This guide covers employment with the County of Los Angeles. Start with the exact examination number and bulletin: similar titles can belong to different departments or recruitment types. The City of Los Angeles is a separate employer.

Distinguish your eligibility, the examination that evaluates you, and departmental selection from an eligible list. Online-test preparation addresses only part of that process.

Open competitive and promotional recruitment

Open competitive examinations accept public applicants; promotional examinations are restricted to County employees. Check the recruitment type before applying.

Noncompetitive and entry-level pipeline routes

Noncompetitive examinations are permitted in defined circumstances, including designated temporary entry-level pipelines such as TempLA, Career Development Intern and Youth Worker. They evaluate a capability standard instead of competitively ranking applicants.

How does the Los Angeles County assessment work?

An examination is broader than a written test

Official source

The County describes examinations as a way to evaluate and rank applicants. Depending on the position, components can include a written test, interview, performance test and evaluation of education or experience.

Published online assessment categories

Official source

The official preparation series covers numerical calculation, deductive reasoning, reading comprehension and a Work Styles Assessment. It also links to SHL practice materials. These resources do not establish that every County examination uses every category or the same assessment product.

Structured interviews can be scored examinations

Official source

The County's interview guide describes structured oral tests using common questions and predefined evaluation standards. It covers experience, behavior, technical knowledge and professional perspective; its examples are preparation material, not current interview questions.

Default bands changed in 2026

Official source

The new default ranges are Band 1 at 90–100%, Band 2 at 80–89% and Band 3 at 70–79%. These are examination-result bands; a raw practice-test percentage cannot predict the same County score.

Older eligible lists need separate treatment

Official source

The reform took effect May 28, 2026. Lists issued before then retain their original score banding, although revised reachability, canvassing and appeal provisions can apply. A legacy five-band result is therefore not automatically an error.

What happens in the Los Angeles County hiring process?

From bulletin to structured interview

The County's interview guide provides preparation guidance rather than a fixed interview schedule.

  1. 1Read the bulletin for duties, qualification requirements and examination components; use the class specification for the broader job description.
  2. 2Match work, study and volunteer experiences to the knowledge and skills the role requires.
  3. 3Prepare both accounts of past actions and explanations of how you would approach a proposed situation.
  4. 4Explain your own contribution and outcome clearly enough for interviewers to evaluate the evidence.

Build preparation from the County's own toolkit

The toolkit offers a wider subject range than the introductory online videos.

  1. 1Match the bulletin's topics to relevant resources, which include arithmetic, data interpretation, reading, writing, mechanical aptitude and office-related subjects.
  2. 2Use practice questions and explanations to diagnose a specific weakness before attempting another set.
  3. 3Read the written-test preparation guidance for general administration advice, while recognizing that departments can have different procedures.

How to prepare for the Los Angeles County assessment process

A useful study plan should follow the advertised duties and examination content. The suggestions below help turn those documents into concrete preparation.

1. Make a bulletin checklist

Record the examination number, recruitment type, documents, qualifications, components and deadlines. Match experience requirements to dated work examples instead of relying on a broad resume summary.

2. Study the announced subjects

Complete a relevant County practice set and explain each error. Check units in calculations and locate supporting evidence in passages. Add timing once your answers are reliable.

3. Prepare assessable interview evidence

Build examples showing your individual decisions and results. Rehearse a difficult public-service interaction, an accuracy problem or competing priorities in terms relevant to the department and classification.

4. Track the result as carefully as the application

Save the bulletin, invitation and score notice together. Check the list's issue date and applicable banding structure, then record each next-step deadline.
