The General Motors hiring process at a glance

  1. 1Apply and qualify — Submit for the specific role; eligibility and screening differ by hiring track.
  2. 2Assessment, if invited — Some technical roles add a skills evaluation; use the named test in your invitation.Assessment evidence
  3. 3Structured interview — Prepare job-relevant behavioral and technical examples.Interview preparation
  4. 4Decision and checks — The recruiter confirms the outcome and any applicable pre-employment requirements.

What to expect in the General Motors assessment

GM’s current public evidence supports role-specific evaluation, with no named common games battery. Check the invitation before selecting a simulator. The existing GM interview practice is independent preparation and does not confirm the platform used for your role.

Good to know: Do not treat the older HireVue account as a prediction of your test length, question format or number of attempts. A recorded interview also does not establish that games will be included.

The General Motors video interview: researched questions

Our General Motors question set supports preparation for the video interview stages described in this guide. Each question is labeled by its evidence: officially published, candidate-reported, or a practice question written for this company or role. Use the timed mock to practice answering aloud.

  1. 1Tell me about a time when the actions you took were resisted or blocked and how you managed the situation.Officially published
  2. 2Tell me about yourself.Reported by multiple candidates
  3. 3Tell me about a time you worked with a team, including a time you met unexpected challenges.Reported by multiple candidates

Which General Motors roles and programs does this guide cover?

Start with the exact requisition and career track. A manufacturing vacancy, a software internship and a TRACK rotation should not be treated as interchangeable assessments. The useful preparation question is which skills your team needs to see demonstrated.

Current programme guidance is more relevant than a fixed sequence copied from an old application. Use the distinctions below to decide whether your next preparation session should focus on technical work, a recorded answer or a live discussion.

TRACK early-career roles

GM’s TRACK page describes a typical interview lasting 60 minutes with two business leaders; technical assessments can be added in some technical areas. Specific degree requirements are attached to each vacancy.

Summer internships

The internship page describes structured interviews with one or more team leaders and possible skills or technical evaluations. Its summer programme is described as 12 weeks, with May or June starts; this is programme context, not an application deadline.

Experienced, skilled-trades and production roles

GM separates these routes on its hiring page. Experienced applicants may receive assessments; the production/warehouse overview describes qualification review without naming a universal test.

How does the General Motors assessment work?

Behavioral evidence remains central

Official source

GM’s current guidance recommends STAR answers based on specific work-related examples and explains that interviews examine skills, knowledge, values and behaviors.

A technical assessment is not one fixed product

Official source

The current internship guidance leaves the technical evaluation dependent on the position. A coding exercise, if your invitation names one, requires different preparation from engineering discussion.

HireVue reports need their date attached

Anecdotal

A September 2021 engineering candidate described a recorded HireVue stage after a recruiter call. This is historical firsthand evidence, not confirmation of a current company-wide sequence, question count or retry rule.

Older toolkit has a narrower use

Official source

GM’s toolkit was revised in March 2022. Its advice to explain your individual actions, reasoning and results is useful; its historical interview timings should not override a newer programme page or invitation.

No confirmed current games battery

No evidence found

The official pages reviewed do not identify a shared games lineup, test vendor, pass score or retake policy. A portal or scheduling assistant does not establish an assessment product.

What happens in the General Motors hiring process?

Current early-career route

The TRACK page provides the clearest programme-specific sequence.

  1. 1Apply to an open requisition with the required profile and resume.
  2. 2If selected, use the preparation information provided by the early-career recruiting team.
  3. 3Expect the published interview format to be adapted to the role; technical assessment may be added.
  4. 4Use the recruiter’s update to confirm the decision and next steps.

Build an interview answer that can withstand follow-up

The 2022 official toolkit explains how to make experience assessable.

  1. 1Give enough context for an interviewer outside your specialty to understand the task.
  2. 2Separate your own decisions and actions from the team’s wider contribution.
  3. 3Explain why you chose the approach and which alternatives you considered.
  4. 4Finish with the result and its practical impact.

When is the General Motors assessment?

Use the requisition deadline and invitation expiry as separate dates. Programme update targets are not guarantees.

The TRACK page targets an application update within two weeks and approximately two weeks after the final interview. Volume and role differences can change those expectations.

How to prepare for the General Motors assessment process

Choose evidence that makes sense for the work rather than memorizing an automotive-themed script. The following are preparation exercises, not a disclosed question list.

1. Create a role-to-example map

For each important requirement, choose a project with a concrete problem, a decision you owned and an observable result. Include one example where the first approach failed and you changed course.

2. Practice a technical walkthrough

For software, explain requirements, edge cases and testing. For engineering, explain constraints, verification and trade-offs. For manufacturing, describe how you found a cause and checked whether the corrective action worked.

3. Make collaboration measurable

Rehearse an example involving another discipline or stakeholder. Show how you clarified disagreement, what evidence changed the discussion and how the decision affected delivery.

4. Prepare for the actual interview medium

If invited to record answers, practice concise camera responses before starting. For a live interview, leave room for follow-up and prepare questions about the team’s priorities and expectations.

General Motors assessment FAQ

Does every GM applicant take HireVue?

That is not established by current official guidance. Older engineering and software accounts describe HireVue; use your own invitation to identify today’s format.

Does GM use assessment games?

No common GM games lineup is confirmed in the sources reviewed. Do not assume a video interview includes games.

How long is a TRACK interview?

The current programme page describes a typical 60-minute interview with two business leaders, with role-dependent variation.

What should I prepare for a technical role?

Prepare to explain relevant projects and decisions, then practice the specific technical format named in your invitation. The programme pages allow for additional technical evaluations.

Can I use one preparation plan for production and office jobs?

Start from the vacancy. GM publishes separate hiring overviews for experienced and student applicants, skilled trades, and production/warehouse work.
