What to expect in the Canonical assessment

GIA is a set of brief aptitude tasks. Thomas’s technical description identifies the five areas below. The practice link offers independent preparation for the category; it does not provide Canonical’s live questions or scoring.

Good to know: PPA concerns typical working behavior and is separate from GIA. Answer it honestly; a polished invented personality gives you little useful basis for discussing your real working style. Preparation should also leave time for written and technical work.

Which Canonical roles and programs does this guide cover?

Prepare around the job’s actual contribution: the decisions you would make, the technology or customers you would work with, and evidence that shows you can do it.

The employer’s FAQ names Thomas International as its assessment partner. A Thomas case study also documents GIA and PPA use, although its growth figures describe the pandemic period and should not be treated as current hiring statistics.

Graduate and experienced applicants

Canonical’s June 2025 hiring-lead guidance distinguishes graduate or associate roles from vacancies open at multiple seniority levels. It says junior and senior achievements are evaluated in context. Choose the appropriate level and explain your contribution, rather than applying indiscriminately.

Technical authors

The documentation team describes peer discussions, a documentation exercise, a documentation-lead conversation and hiring-manager matching. Its exercise examines user needs, information structure and reasoning; the team explicitly distinguishes it from a basic writing test.

How does the Canonical assessment work?

Two confirmed Thomas products

Official source

Thomas’s Canonical case study identifies Aptitude/GIA and Behaviour/PPA and describes their use alongside written evaluation and interviews. This is direct vendor evidence, not an inference from an application portal.

Published assessment durations

Official source

Canonical gives 30–45 minutes for GIA and 10 minutes for PPA. It describes GIA as required for applicants, while technical assessment depends on the role. These are assessment durations, not invitation expiry periods.

Written submission requirements

The FAQ requests an anonymous PDF uploaded through the supplied link. It sets no length requirement. Omit identifying links from this document, while following the original application’s separate instructions.

GIA and PPA reports are available through the dashboard. The FAQ limits resending assessments to platform faults, distinguishing those from device or connection problems.

What happens in the Canonical hiring process?

The general hiring sequence

Canonical groups its process into assessment, interviews, and offer/onboarding. The personalized candidate dashboard sets out the applicable plan.

  1. 1Assessment includes application review, written work, GIA and any requested technical exercise.
  2. 2The published general model has three early domain interviews, followed by a talent conversation and later manager or stakeholder interviews.
  3. 3Management and leadership applicants also meet the CEO. The Hiring Lead communicates a successful offer.

How technical-author interviews differ

The documentation team’s account adds detail about the work being assessed. Treat it as guidance for that discipline, not a guaranteed schedule for software engineering or sales.

  1. 1Use your written answers to explain documentation decisions and the reasoning behind them; later interviewers receive this background.
  2. 2Peer interviews explore experience and how you think about documentation practice, process and products.
  3. 3Prepare to discuss user needs and structure in the technical exercise, then the teams or projects where you could contribute.

How to prepare for the Canonical assessment process

Build a compact evidence bank before your invitation arrives. Useful practice means being able to explain your own decisions clearly, not memorizing a model applicant’s story.

1. Match achievements to the vacancy

Select examples with a clear problem, your contribution, a result and a lesson. For engineering, explain design tradeoffs and failure modes; for commercial work, connect actions to customer or business outcomes.

2. Prepare concise written evidence

Practice answering a broad prompt directly, then supporting it with a specific example. Give academic achievements enough context for a reader from a different education system. Remove repetition rather than targeting an arbitrary page count.

3. Learn GIA task instructions first

Understand each task before trying short timed sets. Record whether mistakes come from misunderstanding, calculation or rushed comparisons; address that cause before repeating a full session.

4. Prepare for a technical conversation

Choose a past project you can explain from first principles. Revisit alternatives you rejected, how you measured success and what you would change. For documentation work, prepare a rationale for the intended reader and information structure.

5. Plan the actual submission

Review the requested document format, upload link and deadline before starting. Reserve time to check that every question is addressed and that identifying information has been removed where requested.

Canonical assessment FAQ

Does Canonical use Thomas GIA?

Yes. Canonical names Thomas International in its FAQ, and Thomas’s case study identifies GIA and PPA. These are different assessments.

Is the GIA the only assessment?

No. Expect written evaluation and interviews as well; technical work depends on the role. Prepare evidence of actual work alongside aptitude practice.

How long should my written interview be?

Canonical sets no required length. Answer every question with enough detail to support your point, using the invitation’s submission instructions.

What score guarantees progression?

No universal cutoff is established by the reviewed public sources. A practice result cannot guarantee progression in Canonical’s process.

Should a technical author prepare for coding tests?

Follow the specific invitation. The documentation team describes an exercise about documentation problems and user needs; it should not be replaced with a generic coding-test preparation plan.
