What to expect in the BT Group assessment

The documented early-careers online stage is a text-and-video assessment. This guide does not attach game simulators because the current sources do not establish a game lineup. Sapia’s general Chat Interview explanation concerns written answers; BT separately adds its recruiter-reviewed video question.

Good to know: Use your invitation and the current BT competency document to choose preparation. Older accounts involving other assessment platforms or exercises may describe a different hiring cycle or role.

Which BT Group roles and programs does this guide cover?

BT Group publishes unusually specific current assessment guidance. The most useful preparation is to organize real examples of learning, teamwork and problem solving and communicate them clearly in writing and on video. A list of generic aptitude games is a poor substitute for the format described in its current UK early-careers pages.

Check the role family before applying this guide. Graduates, interns, technical apprentices and field apprentices do not all share the same competency profile or final assessment. The guidance below is scoped to the published UK process and does not establish a worldwide sequence for every experienced hire.

Graduates and placements

The graduate page describes an online assessment followed by a final competency interview and usually a group exercise. Its FAQ also covers placements. Confirm the particular program’s invitation before assuming an in-person event.

Apprenticeships and field roles

The apprenticeship FAQ distinguishes a standard assessment event from field positions, whose event consists of the competency interview only. Some programs also have an AI-focused group exercise. These details should not be extended to every graduate or experienced role.

Different competency profiles

The June 2026 assessment document separates technical and nontechnical early-careers groups, retail, contact centers and specific field apprenticeships. Identify your category before choosing examples; there is no single profile labeled simply “BT candidate.”

How does the BT Group assessment work?

What Sapia reviews

Official source

BT’s May 2026 notice says Sapia analyzes written responses against role competencies and supplies a recommendation. A recruitment-team member reviews that recommendation before deciding whether to progress the application.

Video review is separate

Official source

The graduate page states that recruiters assess the video response and later stages, while hiring managers make final hiring decisions. The published online assessment combines five written questions with one video question.

Invitation deadline versus task duration

Official source

The graduate FAQ allows five days from invitation. It describes the tasks as untimed overall, estimates 30–35 minutes and separately calls the video response 90 seconds. Read the recording controls carefully: an untimed assessment does not mean an unlimited video answer.

Written examples can come from outside employment

Official source

Sapia’s own candidate explainer encourages personal examples, including education and hobbies. It describes saving, returning to and editing written answers, making focused, complete explanations more useful than rushing.

What the technical profile emphasizes

Official source

The published technical graduate/intern and Level 5–6 apprentice profile includes analytical thinking, learning agility, accountability, teamwork, detail and communication. The nontechnical profile instead includes drive, resilience and relationship building alongside shared competencies.

What happens in the BT Group hiring process?

How to prepare for the Sapia stage

The vendor’s candidate explainer explains the written interaction; BT’s own instructions govern the number of questions and deadline.

  1. 1Build examples from work, education or other genuine experiences before the assessment.
  2. 2When practicing, explain the situation, your decisions and the result in concise prose.
  3. 3Review each answer for completeness and clarity. Save-and-return support concerns the written interview; check the separate video instructions.

How the final stage varies for apprentices

BT’s apprenticeship FAQ provides details that are easy to miss in the general application overview.

  1. 1A screening conversation checks essential entry requirements before the final event.
  2. 2The FAQ describes an onsite competency interview with five questions.
  3. 3Some programs include a group activity concerning AI; field roles use the competency interview alone.
  4. 4Follow the booking instructions for the specific site, documents and accessible arrangements.

When is the BT Group assessment?

The pages reviewed contain details for the 2026 intake. Treat old opening dates as historical cycle information, not a new application window.

The graduate FAQ says BT aims to communicate outcomes within two weeks after an assessment event. This is an aim after that event, not a promise that the whole application finishes in two weeks.

How to prepare for the BT Group assessment process

Prepare for evidence-based communication and collaborative problem solving. The activities below are independent practice suggestions, not actual BT questions.

1. Select examples for your competency category

A technical applicant could use a debugging task, a checked calculation or a system improvement. A nontechnical applicant could use a demanding team project or a customer problem. Explain what you personally noticed and changed, and keep the result specific enough to evaluate.

2. Practice concise written answers

Choose a real situation and write a short response explaining the challenge, your action and what happened. Remove vague claims such as being a good team player unless the next sentence demonstrates them. Re-read the question and check that the answer addresses the requested behavior.

3. Prepare one clear recorded explanation

Rehearse explaining a project or motivation in about 90 seconds, without memorizing a script. Give the listener enough context to understand your decision and end with an outcome. Test sound and lighting so technical distractions do not obscure your answer.

4. Build a collaborative discussion habit

For roles with a group exercise, practice summarizing a problem, proposing a sensible criterion and inviting another perspective. On a technology or AI topic, weigh practical value, data quality and affected customers before proposing a solution. This is a rehearsal topic, not a promised exercise.

BT Group assessment FAQ

Does BT Group currently use Sapia?

Yes. Its graduate guidance, June 2026 competency document and May 2026 recruitment notice explicitly identify Sapia for the relevant written assessment. That does not establish the same process for every BT Group vacancy worldwide.

Is the assessment all AI-scored?

BT says AI supports review of written answers, with recruiter review of the recommendation. Recruiters assess video responses and later stages. Its notice also explains how candidates can request human review.

Do field apprentices attend a group exercise?

The current apprenticeship FAQ says field roles have an interview-only assessment event. Other apprenticeship programs may include a group exercise. Use the details for your exact vacancy.

Can I take breaks during the written assessment?

The written stage supports pausing and returning. Keep the invitation expiry in view, and check the separate controls for the video response before starting it.

What is the best way to prepare?

Match genuine examples to the published role competencies and practice explaining them clearly. Spend time on written structure, a short spoken explanation and role knowledge before considering unrelated aptitude-game practice.
