The Atlassian hiring process at a glance

  1. 1Application — Choose the right role and region; eligibility differs between graduate and internship opportunities.
  2. 2Initial assessment — Graduate coding or product case study; Karat technical screening is documented for engineering.Assessment formats
  3. 3Role interviews — The interview content follows your professional discipline and seniority.Role differences
  4. 4Values and decision — Values discussions form part of the published engineering and product processes.

What to expect in the Atlassian assessment

The documented formats are coding, live technical assessment and product case work. There is no verified Atlassian game lineup to reproduce here.

Good to know: Memory or reaction-speed games do not reproduce these exercises. Choose coding problems or a product brief matching your invitation; independent practice is not an exact Atlassian assessment.

Which Atlassian roles and programs does this guide cover?

Start with the role and level on your invitation. Engineering screens, graduate assessments and product panels require different preparation. Combining every published stage into one sequence would be misleading.

Students and graduates

The early-careers programme distinguishes graduates in their final year or recently graduated from internships aimed at penultimate-year students. Check the individual vacancy for applicable qualifications and regional conditions.

Engineering

The engineering handbook describes coding, systems design, manager and values interviews. Its emphasis is the reasoning behind technical choices.

Product management

The product handbook applies its expectations to associate product-manager applicants and experienced hires. It evaluates leadership, professional skill, outcomes and communication.

How does the Atlassian assessment work?

A required graduate assessment

Official source

The early-careers guide makes passing the initial assessment a prerequisite for the interview loop. It gives coding tests and take-home product cases as role-specific examples.

Engineering design discussion

Official source

The handbook describes a 60-minute systems-design session covering practical architecture and constraints such as reliability and cost. This is a session length, not a company-wide assessment deadline.

Product interviews assess outcomes

Official source

The product handbook asks candidates to distinguish delivering a feature from improving customer or business results. Communication is evaluated across interviews.

No universal game set established

No evidence found

The reviewed hiring guides do not establish a company-wide game-based battery, numerical cutoff or universal test vendor. Check the actual invitation for those details.

Values are explicit

Official source

Atlassian’s values emphasise openness, thoughtful execution, customers, teamwork and taking initiative. Use these themes to select examples of decisions you have actually made.

What happens in the Atlassian hiring process?

The graduate interview route

The early-careers guide gives this broad sequence; the recruiter supplies your schedule.

  1. 1Submit an application matched to the opportunity.
  2. 2Complete the initial assessment by its stated deadline.
  3. 3Prepare for three to four interviews, potentially combining professional skills, leadership and values. The guide describes a virtual-first approach.

Engineering and technical screening

Read the engineering handbook alongside any separately scheduled Karat invitation.

  1. 1Coding interviews address data structures and code design; candidates can choose their programming language.
  2. 2Systems design explores assumptions and trade-offs. Manager discussions cover projects, collaboration and growth.
  3. 3A values conversation examines how you work and make decisions.

The product-management panel

Atlassian publishes a separate product process.

  1. 1Begin with the hiring-manager conversation described in the handbook.
  2. 2The subsequent panel comprises three interviews on product expectations and a separate values interview.
  3. 3Interviewers record individual feedback, then discuss their recommendation with the hiring manager.

When is the Atlassian assessment?

Use the vacancy for recruitment dates and the invitation for assessment deadlines. Neither is interchangeable with programme start dates.

The early-careers page lists regional recruitment and programme calendars, but some internship date descriptions are inconsistent across its sections. A dated local vacancy is the safer source for a specific intake.

How to prepare for the Atlassian assessment process

Choose one preparation track first, then add examples about teamwork and judgement. The exercises below are practice suggestions, not promised interview questions.

1. Rehearse coding as an explanation

Choose a small task-tracking problem. Clarify inputs, implement a solution, test edge cases and justify each structure. Then change one requirement and revise the design.

2. Make a design discussion concrete

Sketch a shared issue tracker. Consider simultaneous edits, permissions, failure recovery and increasing traffic. State assumptions before selecting technologies, then identify a measurement that would trigger a design change.

3. Build a product case around a decision

Pick a workflow that frustrates a team. Define the affected user, compare two possible improvements and choose a success metric. Present a short recommendation explaining the opportunity cost and what evidence would reverse your decision.

4. Prepare values examples with consequences

Select a real example involving a difficult choice for each published value. Explain your action, its effect on other people and what you would now improve. Prepare a concise version, then practice responding to requests for more detail.

Atlassian assessment FAQ

Does every Atlassian applicant use Karat?

No universal requirement is established. Karat confirms an engineering screening partnership; your invitation determines whether you take that route.

Should I prepare for a recorded video interview?

Do not assume a recording task from the phrase virtual interview. Check whether your session is live, recorded or an independent exercise, and prepare for that format.

How should I approach the values interview?

Use specific decisions and consequences. Explain how you responded to disagreement or customer feedback rather than memorising slogans.

Are all advertised programme dates reliable deadlines?

Programme start months and broad recruitment seasons are not application deadlines. Retain the date shown on your vacancy and any separate completion deadline in the assessment invitation.
