FE Mechanical exam guide

FE Mechanical practice exam

110 questions · 5 hours 20 minutes · two parts of 55 with a 25-minute break

The CBT format: 110 questions drawn in the NCEES specification’s proportions for every knowledge area, on the real 5 hours 20 minutes exam clock. After part 1 you submit and take the optional 25-minute scheduled break, which does not use exam time. You get a score by knowledge area, like the NCEES diagnostic report, and a worked solution for every question.

Before you start

  • Most questions are multiple choice with four options. Some are the exam’s alternative item types: select all that apply, or fill in a number. Every question is scored right or wrong with no partial credit, as NCEES scores it.
  • Keep your free copy of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook open, as on exam day, and use an NCEES-approved calculator.
  • Within a part you can skip, go back, change answers and flag questions. Once you submit part 1 it stays closed, as on the real exam. The clock keeps running in background tabs and reloads; when time runs out, your answers are submitted.
