The Rolls-Royce early-careers process, explained

Every stage of Rolls-Royce plc’s graduate, internship and apprenticeship process, what the Aon battery actually contains, the interview questions the company publishes itself, and where the evidence stops.

The Rolls-Royce interview rounds at a glance

  1. 1Online application — An online form with screening questions of up to 300 words each: the 2026 guide prints three for graduates, internships and higher or degree apprenticeships, and two for Level 3 apprenticeships. Rolls-Royce explicitly allows AI tools "as a foundation or to help you form a first draft".
  2. 2Aon online assessments — Three assessments inside Aon chatAssess: an untimed situational judgement exercise (~20 minutes), an untimed personality assessment, and a timed six-minute logical reasoning test. All three together "shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes", in one sitting, in any order. The assessments, in detail
  3. 3Automated sift, then a human review — Score below the minimum pass mark and the application is rejected automatically; the mark is set on bespoke Rolls-Royce norm groups built by Aon and verified each year. Clear it and Rolls-Royce reviews your results and written answers together before inviting you to an assessment center.
  4. 4Assessment center — A half-day session, virtual for graduates and interns and in person for apprentices: an interview against four behaviors, a seven-minute prepared presentation with assessor Q&A, and a technical case-study exercise. No group exercise appears in the current published format. The published interview questions
  5. 5Offer — The fourth and final stage on the official UK page. Defence-linked roles then need UK security clearance, which lengthens the gap between offer and start date.Dates and windows

What games are in the Rolls-Royce assessment?

The Rolls-Royce online stage is a three-part Aon battery rather than a set of arcade-style games. Only one part is timed, and only that part has a practice format on this site. The two untimed parts, the situational judgement exercise and the personality assessment, have no simulator here and you should not want one: both reward reading carefully and answering consistently, not reflexes. Everything below is scoped by the official 2021-22 document, which describes the assessments for engineering programmes.

Aon chatAssess situational judgement exercise (untimed, about 20 minutes)

Category practice

Official source

An instant-messaging style work simulation: you read a work scenario delivered as chat messages and choose how to respond. Rolls-Royce says it is not timed but should take around 20 minutes, that it is available in English only, and that it comes first, with the other two assessments offered towards the end of it. Prep sites add that you are asked to imagine being six months into a Rolls-Royce job; that framing is prep-site wording, not the company’s. There is no simulator for chatAssess on this site, and no route here reproduces it.

Timed logical reasoning assessment (6 minutes)

Closest practice only

Official source

The only timed part. Rolls-Royce’s table lists "Logical Reasoning Assessment", six minutes, measuring "your ability to solve complex problems", and the guidance repeats that you have six minutes in total. Candidates in recent cycles call it "Switch", and prep sites identify it as Aon’s switchChallenge, but Rolls-Royce has never published the name: the word "switch" does not appear anywhere in its document. Our Switch Challenge practice trains the same six-minute, speed-and-accuracy logical format, so use it as a format match rather than proof of which Aon test you will see.

Source: Rolls-Royce Help and tips for online assessments PDF (name "Switch" from candidate reports and prep sites only)

Practice Timed logical reasoning assessment (6 minutes)

Aon personality assessment (untimed)

Category practice

Official source

A questionnaire on "your preferred ways of behaving and working", untimed, taken inside chatAssess in either order with the logical test. Prep sites call it "Measurement of Competencies" and candidate posts call it "Work Based"; neither name is Rolls-Royce’s. There is no simulator and no scoring trick: answer consistently and honestly, because the report is read alongside an interview that probes the same behaviors.

Source: Rolls-Royce Help and tips for online assessments PDF

Good to know: Only the six-minute logical reasoning test has a practice format here, and it is a format match rather than a confirmed identity: Rolls-Royce publishes the duration and the skill but not the test name. The vendor document itself is from the 2021-22 cycle and the published table covers engineering programmes, so business-stream content and the current cycle’s exact lineup are unconfirmed. Do not practice Aon grid, digit or motion challenges on the strength of this page: there is no evidence any of them is used. Your invitation email is the binding source for what you will sit, its deadline and its device requirements.

Who gets the Rolls-Royce assessment?

Rolls-Royce plc runs its UK Emerging Talent programs (graduates, interns, higher and degree apprentices, Level 3 apprentices and the Enterprise Skills Accelerator) through four stages that its own careers site lists plainly: online application, online assessments, assessment centre, offer. The online assessments are the part candidates search for, and Rolls-Royce has published more about them than most employers do.

Its "Help and tips for online assessments" PDF states that three assessments sit inside Aon chatAssess, gives a Rolls-Royce support address at aon.com, says data is shared with "3rd party supplier Aon", and explains that the automatic pass mark rests on bespoke Rolls-Royce norm groups created by Aon. The catch is the date: that document was created in September 2021 and scopes itself to the October 2021 to July 2022 cycle. Candidates posting through the 2025 and 2026 cycles describe the same battery, but Rolls-Royce has not re-published the vendor name since, and an RPO-led redesign of its early-careers assessment happened at some point in between. Treat Aon as strongly evidenced for the format and dated for the current cycle.

One thing this page will not tell you is that Rolls-Royce uses Arctic Shores. Some prep sites list it there. We found no evidence for it: Rolls-Royce’s own assessment guidance names Aon, and no official page, vendor case study or candidate account mentions Arctic Shores. There is likewise no evidence of pymetrics, HireVue, Criteria, Cognify or SHL.

Everything below carries its source and confidence, including the places where the evidence runs out: business-stream test content, the 2027 intake dates, and whether regions outside the UK and Germany see the Aon battery at all.

UK Engineering & Technology Graduate Programme (24 months)

The official UK internships and graduates page lists the engineering and technology graduate programme at up to £31,000 per year starting salary plus a £2,000 joining bonus. A mirror of the 2026-intake posting describes 24 months of rotational "gigs" across Engineering, Technology and Safety or the Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems businesses, based in Derby, Bristol and Solihull, open to any STEM degree or STEM joint honours.

Official source

UK internships: 12-month and 10-week summer

The same official page lists an Engineering & Technology 12-month internship and an Engineering & Technology 10-week summer internship. Interns follow the same route as graduates: online application, the online assessments, and a virtual assessment center with the interview, presentation and case-study exercise.

Official source

UK Enterprise Skills Accelerator (business, 12 months)

A 12-month business program listed alongside the graduate and internship routes. Rolls-Royce publishes no selection detail specific to it, and the one candidate thread that discusses it could not be loaded. Assume the published early-careers sequence applies, but read your own invitation rather than this page for the ESA specifics.

No evidence found

Source: Program exists on the official UK page; selection specifics unpublished

UK apprenticeships (Level 3, Higher, Degree)

Higher and degree apprentices answer the same three screening questions as graduates and attend an assessment center with an interview, a seven-minute presentation and a case-study exercise. Level 3 apprentices answer two screening questions, give a five-minute presentation pitched at a manager, and do a practical activity that tests how well they learn and follow instructions instead of a case study. Apprentices attend in person, not virtually.

United States: a different process, with no online assessment stage

The official US internships and graduates page describes three to four stages: online application, in-person or telephone assessment, assessment center or hiring-manager interview, offer, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. There is no online assessment stage and no vendor named. The 2021-22 guidance said only Germany and UK candidates received links to the online assessments, so do not assume the Aon battery applies to a US application.

Official source

Source: Rolls-Royce US internships & graduates page

Germany: the other region confirmed for the online assessments

The 2021-22 guidance opens by saying candidates in Germany and the UK receive links to the online assessments. German early-careers pages otherwise describe the same three to four phase structure as the US: online application, a personal or telephone assessment, an assessment center or hiring-manager interview for graduates, then the offer.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a different company

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood belongs to the BMW Group and runs its own graduate program, internships and apprenticeships on BMW Group careers. It publishes no selection-process detail. Nothing on this page applies to it, and nothing about it should be read back onto Rolls-Royce plc. Rolls-Royce SMR is likewise a separate company with its own early-careers route.

How does the Rolls-Royce assessment work?

Rolls-Royce names Aon itself, for the 2021-22 cycle

Official source

The company’s own "Help and tips for online assessments" PDF says "You will have three assessments within the Aon chatAssess", tells candidates to contact rolls-royce.support@aon.com, states that information is shared with "3rd party supplier Aon", and explains that the minimum pass mark "is based upon bespoke Rolls-Royce plc norm groups as well as validated general population norm groups created by Aon". The same document scopes itself: "Our global recruitment cycle runs from October 2021 until July 2022." That is the newest official document naming the vendor.

Aon (cut-e) has described Rolls-Royce as a client since 2014

Official source

An Aon case study on game-based assessments, coded October 2017, quotes a Rolls-Royce resourcing manager saying cut-e had been the company’s global assessment partner since 2014 for apprentice and graduate selection, integrated with its Taleo system and handling more than 40,000 candidates a year at that time. Those volumes and the completion rates in the same document are 2017 figures; do not read them as current.

Three assessments, one sitting, under 45 minutes

Official source

Verbatim: "The Situational Judgement Exercise (SJE) itself is not timed, however it should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Towards the end of the SJE you will be asked to complete two additional assessments, a personality assessment (which is not timed) and a logical reasoning assessment (which is timed). You can take these in any order." The guidance says all three together "shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes". A common prep-site error is to describe chatAssess alone as a 45-minute test; that is the total for the set.

Seven days to complete, once per cycle

Official source

The link arrives within 36 to 48 hours of submitting your application, and candidates have seven days from the invitation being sent; anyone who has not completed by then is withdrawn. You can only complete the online assessments once during the recruitment cycle. Prep sites still quote a ten-day window, which is older wording.

Source: Rolls-Royce Help and tips for online assessments PDF (2021-22 cycle)

The sift is automated, and the pass mark is Aon-normed

Official source

Verbatim: "if you don’t achieve our minimum pass mark, then your application will be rejected automatically". The mark is verified each year against bespoke Rolls-Royce plc norm groups and validated general population norms created by Aon. No cutoff figure is published, and nobody outside the company knows it.

The published three-test table covers engineering programs

Official source

The table that lists the SJE (untimed), the Logical Reasoning Assessment (6 minutes, "Your ability to solve complex problems") and the Personality Assessment (untimed, "Your preferred ways of behaving and working") is headed as assessments for engineering programmes. What business-stream applicants sit is not officially published. Prep sites claim numerical, verbal or mechanical reasoning modules, and one unfetched candidate-thread snippet mentions a feedback report covering SJT, numerical and logical sections; none of that is confirmed, so we do not list those tests here.

Source: Rolls-Royce Help and tips for online assessments PDF (engineering programmes table)

Region matters: UK and Germany got the links

Official source

The 2021-22 guidance opens: "Candidates in Germany and UK will receive links to complete our online assessments." The official US page lists an in-person or telephone assessment as its second stage instead, and neither the India nor the China early-careers material publishes any assessment detail. Do not assume the Aon battery outside the UK and Germany.

A feedback report, for some programs only

Official source

Candidates on some Rolls-Royce programs in the UK and Singapore can download a feedback report from the Aon site after completing the assessments. It reports on your performance; it does not tell you the outcome of your application.

What candidates in the 2025 and 2026 cycles describe

Anecdotal

Candidates posting in the 2025 and 2026 cycles describe two assessments they call "Work Based" and "Switch", with speed-and-accuracy feedback and six-minute levels on the logical test, and one round of online tests before the assessment center. That matches the Aon battery in shape. These are forum posts we could not load directly (the threads return HTTP 403 to every method, so only search-index snippets are available); treat them as anecdotal corroboration of the format, not as a source for names.

Rolls-Royce told candidates not to practice other tests

Official source

The 2021-22 online-assessments guidance says: "There is no advantage to be gained by practicing using other assessments available on the internet." Our honest read: that line is about not memorizing items from unrelated tests, and it is five years old. Knowing the format, the six-minute clock and the one-sitting rule before you start is a different thing, and the same company’s current assessment center guide tells candidates to make sure they practice their presentation.

No Arctic Shores, pymetrics, HireVue or SHL evidence

No evidence found

A handful of prep pages place Rolls-Royce under other vendors. The Arctic Shores claim traces to a single uncited sentence in a listicle, with no date and no candidate evidence, and it contradicts the employer’s own document. No official or candidate source anywhere connects Rolls-Royce plc to pymetrics, HireVue, Criteria, Cognify or SHL. If your invitation names one of them, follow the invitation and tell us so this page can be corrected.

What happens in the Rolls-Royce hiring process?

The UK early-careers sequence

Rolls-Royce’s UK page lists four stages, and its two 2026 preparation guides fill in what happens inside each.

  1. 1Apply online, answering the screening questions in up to 300 words each. The 2026 guide prints three questions for graduates, interns and higher or degree apprentices: what about Rolls-Royce makes you want to start a career there, why you want an Emerging Talent Programme, and one social, technological, economic or environmental trend that will change how the company works. AI tools are allowed as a foundation or first draft only.
  2. 2Within 36 to 48 hours, receive the link to the online assessments. You have seven days.
  3. 3Complete all three Aon chatAssess assessments in one sitting, in any order, in under 45 minutes: the untimed SJE, the untimed personality assessment and the timed six-minute logical reasoning test. You get one attempt per recruitment cycle.
  4. 4Pass the automated minimum mark, or the application is rejected automatically. Clear it and Rolls-Royce reviews your results and your written application in detail before emailing the outcome.
  5. 5Attend the assessment center: virtual and half a day for graduates and interns, in person for apprentices. Interview, seven-minute prepared presentation with Q&A, and a technical case-study exercise on the day.
  6. 6Receive the offer. Defence-linked roles then require UK security clearance before you start.

The assessment center, activity by activity

Rolls-Royce’s current published assessment center guide (served under a 2026 filename; the document itself is dated 2024) is unusually specific, and it prints the interview questions.

  1. 1Interview. The published questions include "Tell me a bit about yourself and your interests", what you personally hope to gain from the early-career program, and the same trends question from the application form explored in more depth. Graduates also get a question on managing multiple projects or deadlines at once, and on delivering recommendations with limited time to research and plan.
  2. 2More published questions: something you did recently to learn or develop yourself and how you will learn what the program requires; a time you sought other people’s views or perspectives to make a decision and how you will build relationships in a team; a time you supported someone struggling with a new task or process; and what you would do if you saw someone showing negative attitudes or behaviors towards others or towards Rolls-Royce processes.
  3. 3Every question maps to one of four behaviors: Put safety first, Do the right thing, Keep it simple, Make a difference. The guide notes that interviewers may not ask every question or ask them in this order.
  4. 4Presentation. Seven minutes, prepared in advance, plus assessor Q&A. Engineering programs: a technical subject of your choice, explained so a senior colleague from another discipline can follow it, why it is relevant to Rolls-Royce, and what you learned and developed. Business programs: any complex subject, linked back to the company. Level 3 apprentices give five minutes pitched at a manager.
  5. 5Technical exercise. You respond to a case study given to you on the day, scored against the same four behaviors. Level 3 apprentices instead do a practical activity that tests how well they learn and follow instructions.
  6. 6No group exercise. The current guide lists only the interview, the presentation and the case-study exercise. Group tasks and tower-building exercises appear in pre-2019 candidate reports and in legacy prep-site copy, not in the published format.

Source: Rolls-Royce Assessment Centre Preparation Guide (2026 filename, document dated 2024)

Where regions diverge

The online assessment stage is not global. The official pages describe different sequences by country.

  1. 1UK: online application, Aon online assessments, assessment centre, offer. Virtual center for graduates and interns, in person for apprentices.
  2. 2Germany: the same three to four phase structure as the US on its own pages, but the 2021-22 guidance confirms German candidates did receive online assessment links.
  3. 3United States: online application, in-person or telephone assessment, assessment center or hiring-manager interview, offer. Minimum 3.0 GPA. No online assessment stage is listed and no vendor is named.
  4. 4India: Emerging Talent internships in Bangalore and Pune, two cohorts a year, six to twelve months. No assessment detail is published.
  5. 5Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (BMW Group, Goodwood) and Rolls-Royce SMR are separate employers with their own processes. Neither publishes selection detail, and neither uses the process described here.

When is the Rolls-Royce assessment?

Rolls-Royce publishes no dates for the 2027 intake as of 11 September 2026: the UK internships and graduates page shows none, and the company’s early-careers job feed listed only China trainee roles when we checked. What follows is the previous cycle’s pattern plus the response windows the company does publish. Do not treat the 2025 dates as this year’s deadline.

No UK graduate or internship posting was live on the company’s early-careers feed on 11 September 2026, and no dates appear on the official UK page. If last cycle’s pattern holds, expect an autumn 2026 opening with assessment centers in late autumn, but that is an inference from one prior cycle, not a published date. Watch careers.rolls-royce.com and apply as soon as the posting appears: last cycle’s advert reserved the right to close early on application volume.

How to practice for the Rolls-Royce assessment

Two of the three online assessments cannot be crammed, and the third can. Spend your practice time on the six-minute logical reasoning test, where pacing and accuracy under a hard clock are trainable, and spend your preparation time on the assessment center, where Rolls-Royce has published the actual interview questions and the presentation brief. That is a rare advantage and most candidates waste it.

Rolls-Royce’s 2021-22 guidance told candidates there is no advantage in practicing other assessments found online. Read that as a warning against memorizing items from unrelated tests, which we agree with. Knowing the format, the six-minute limit and the one-sitting rule before you open the link is a different matter, and no scoring model or cutoff is published by anyone.

Step 1

Read your invitation email before anything else

It names the platform, the assessments, the deadline and the device requirements for your cycle and your region. The vendor document behind this page is from the 2021-22 cycle, so the invitation outranks it on every point of conflict.

Step 2

Drill the six-minute logical format

Run Switch Challenge practice against the clock until your accuracy holds at speed rather than collapsing in the last minute. Six minutes is short enough that a slow start costs the whole test, and speed-and-accuracy feedback is what candidates describe seeing.

Step 3

Plan the untimed parts as untimed

The SJE is untimed but budgeted at about 20 minutes, and the personality assessment is untimed too. Read each scenario properly rather than racing, and answer the personality questions consistently: the same behaviors come back in the interview, where inconsistency shows.

Step 4

Sit all three in one block, in the right conditions

Quiet room, laptop or desktop, notifications off, English only for the SJE. You get one attempt per recruitment cycle and breaks are only sensible inside the untimed sections, never in the six-minute test.

Step 5

Prepare the published interview questions literally

Write an answer to each question printed in the assessment center guide, and map each to one of the four behaviors: Put safety first, Do the right thing, Keep it simple, Make a difference. The safety questions (supporting someone struggling with a new task, and challenging negative behavior) are the ones candidates most often improvise, in a company where safety is the first behavior for a reason.

Step 6

Build and rehearse the seven-minute presentation

Engineering: pick a technical subject you know well, then cut it until a senior colleague from another discipline could follow it, and end on why it matters to Rolls-Royce and what you learned. Time it at seven minutes with the Q&A in mind. Business programs get five to seven minutes on any complex subject; Level 3 apprentices get five minutes pitched at a manager.

Step 7

Practice a case study cold

The technical exercise is handed to you on the day. Rehearse the sequence of reading a brief quickly, stating your assumptions, making a defensible recommendation and explaining it simply. Do not prepare for a group exercise: the current published format has none.

Step 8

Reuse your application answers

The trends question on the application form comes back at the interview in more depth, which the guide says explicitly. Keep a copy of what you submitted and go further on it rather than contradicting yourself.

Rolls-Royce assessment FAQ

Does Rolls-Royce use Aon or Arctic Shores?

Aon, on the evidence. Rolls-Royce’s own online-assessment guidance names Aon chatAssess, gives a support address at aon.com and says the pass mark uses norm groups created by Aon. That document covers the 2021-22 cycle and the company has not re-published the vendor name since, so it is dated rather than uncertain. Arctic Shores appears only in one uncited prep-site sentence, with no official or candidate evidence behind it, so do not prepare for Arctic Shores games on that basis.

What is in the Rolls-Royce online assessment?

Three assessments inside Aon chatAssess: an untimed situational judgement exercise that should take about 20 minutes, an untimed personality assessment, and a timed logical reasoning test lasting six minutes in total. You take them in one sitting, in any order, and all three together should not take more than 45 minutes. That published table covers engineering programmes; business-stream content is not published.

Is the Rolls-Royce "Switch" test the same as Aon switchChallenge?

Probably, but Rolls-Royce has never said so. Its guidance describes only a timed six-minute logical reasoning assessment measuring your ability to solve complex problems; the word "switch" does not appear in the document. Candidates in recent cycles call it Switch and prep sites identify it as Aon’s switchChallenge. Our Switch Challenge practice trains the same six-minute format, which is useful either way.

How long do I have to complete the Rolls-Royce online assessments?

Seven days from the invitation being sent, and the link arrives within 36 to 48 hours of your application. Candidates who have not completed in that window are withdrawn, and you only get one attempt per recruitment cycle. Prep sites that say ten days are quoting older wording. Your invitation email carries the binding date.

Is the Rolls-Royce sift automated, and is there a pass mark?

Yes, it is automated: below the minimum pass mark your application is rejected automatically. The mark is verified each year against bespoke Rolls-Royce norm groups and validated general population norms built by Aon. The number itself is not published. If you clear it, Rolls-Royce then reviews your results and your written answers together before deciding on an assessment center invitation.

What happens at the Rolls-Royce assessment center, and is there a group exercise?

A half-day session, virtual for graduates and interns and in person for apprentices: an interview, a seven-minute prepared presentation with assessor Q&A, and a technical exercise responding to a case study given on the day, all scored against four behaviors. There is no group exercise in the current published format. Rolls-Royce prints the interview questions in its own preparation guide, so prepare them directly.

When do Rolls-Royce 2027 applications open?

No dates are published as of 11 September 2026, and no UK graduate or internship posting was live on the company’s early-careers feed when we checked. The previous cycle closed on 14 November 2025 with assessment centers in November and December, and reserved the right to close early on application volume. Expect an autumn opening, check the careers site rather than this page for the date, and apply early.

Do US, India or China applicants take the Aon tests?

There is no evidence that they do. The Rolls-Royce guidance says candidates in Germany and the UK receive the online assessment links, and the official US page lists an in-person or telephone assessment as its second stage instead, with no vendor named. India publishes internships only and no assessment detail, and China early-career roles publish none either.
