The Morgan Stanley application process, explained

Which Morgan Stanley stages are actually evidenced, how strong that evidence is, what the reported Aon and HireVue stages involve, and where to practice the one format we can simulate.

The Morgan Stanley interview rounds at a glance

  1. 1Online application — CV, often a cover letter, through Morgan Stanley's own campus portal at morganstanley.tal.net. The portal caps how many programs you can apply to per recruiting year, and the cap is regional. Recruiting is rolling and no closing date appears on the vacancy pages.Deadlines and the application cap
  2. 2Online assessment — reported, EMEA campus programs — Candidates report an Aon (cut-e) battery: numerical, deductive or logical reasoning, a chat-based situational judgement exercise and the switchChallenge. Morgan Stanley names no vendor. Off-cycle and experienced-hire candidates report no online assessment at all, and the technology track reportedly diverges to a coding test. What the reported tests are Practice switchChallenge
  3. 3HireVue one-way video interview — reported — Candidates report a recorded interview of about three to five questions, roughly 30 seconds to prepare and about 1.5 minutes to record each answer, around 30 minutes end to end. Mostly behavioral and motivational; investment banking candidates report one lighter technical or markets question.Reported Morgan Stanley interview questions
  4. 4First-round interview — Phone, video or in person, built around your CV and your application. Morgan Stanley's own guidance says interviews "could be competency, strengths based, skills based or technical".
  5. 5Final round — Superday or assessment center — Back-to-back interviews in one day with assessors from associate through managing director. Some UK and EMEA accounts describe a group exercise and, for certain roles, a case study, written exercise or presentation.
  6. 6Offer — Some candidate-report aggregators put the whole process at about four to six weeks, though a full campus cycle from application to offer commonly runs several months. Morgan Stanley publishes no timeline.

What games are in the Morgan Stanley assessment?

Morgan Stanley publishes no test list, so there is no confirmed lineup to practice. Below is what candidates report, with the nearest practice route we have. Only one reported component maps to a simulator on this site: the switchChallenge, on the Aon side. The chat-based situational judgement exercise has no practice equivalent here, and we would rather say so than send you to something unrelated. If you are applying off-cycle, to an experienced-hire role, or to a technology role, this section may not apply to you at all.

switchChallenge (Aon smartPredict) — reported

Closest practice only

Multiple sources

A timed deductive reasoning task. eFinancialCareers calls the SwitchChallenge "a kind of gamified test of your numerical and cognitive ability" with levels, noting that top candidates get to level 40 and beyond; candidate write-ups name it directly as part of the Morgan Stanley online assessment. Reported timings conflict across sources, so treat any specific figure you see elsewhere with suspicion and let the practice clock rather than a number guide you. Our Switch Challenge trains the same format on the Aon side — it is practice for the task type, not a copy of Morgan Stanley's configuration.

Practice switchChallenge (Aon smartPredict) — reported

chatAssess situational judgement (Aon) — reported, no practice route here

Category practice

Single source

Candidates describe a chat or instant-message simulation in which you answer as an analyst, choosing how to respond to colleagues and clients in realistic workplace scenarios. Aon's own material describes chatAssess as a situational judgement questionnaire embedded into an instant messaging simulation. eFinancialCareers independently reports situational judgement questions built on circumstances Morgan Stanley employees are likely to meet, which is what makes this reportable at all. We have no simulator for this format, so there is nothing to link — prepare by thinking through how a junior analyst should escalate, prioritize and communicate, not by drilling a game.

Numerical and deductive reasoning tests — reported, format practice only

Category practice

Single source

Candidate accounts list a numerical reasoning test and a deductive or logical reasoning test alongside the two named exercises. Nobody publishes Morgan Stanley's exact modules, and the specific item counts circulating on prep sites are untraceable. Our Aon practice hub carries the closest formats — timed numerical and rule-finding work under a short clock — which is useful preparation for the demand even though it is not Morgan Stanley's battery.

pymetrics and Arctic Shores games: no evidence at Morgan Stanley

Category practice

No evidence found

Neither platform is evidenced here by any source — official, press, candidate or vendor. Arctic Shores does not list Morgan Stanley as a client, and every pymetrics result we found for "Morgan Stanley" was actually about JPMorgan Chase, a different firm whose pymetrics stage is separately documented and retired. Practicing those batteries for a Morgan Stanley application would be preparing for something nothing suggests exists.

Source: Targeted searches for pymetrics and Arctic Shores at Morgan Stanley, 11 September 2026

Good to know: None of these is a confirmed Morgan Stanley assessment. Morgan Stanley names no vendor on any of its own pages, the anchoring press report is from 2021, and the most recent candidate corroboration we found covers the 2025 UK cycle. The practice routes here are the nearest formats we offer, not simulators of Morgan Stanley's battery. Your invitation email is the only document that tells you whether you are being tested, what you are sitting, and by when — and if it names the modules, tell us so this page can be tightened.

Who gets the Morgan Stanley assessment?

Morgan Stanley is unusually quiet about its assessments. We fetched and keyword-scanned four of its own pages — the students-and-graduates hub, the interview-preparation page, the EMEA Early Insight FAQ, and the live 2027 vacancy board and a 2027 Technology Summer Analyst posting on morganstanley.tal.net. Between them they contain zero occurrences of HireVue, psychometric, online assessment, game, Aon, pymetrics, Arctic Shores or SHL. Everything on this page about a test or a platform therefore comes from press reporting or from candidates, and is labeled that way.

The vendor evidence has two independent strands. eFinancialCareers reported in September 2021 that Morgan Stanley "began working with Aon to develop tests" from 2018, quoting a named Morgan Stanley EMEA talent acquisition manager and describing a SwitchChallenge as "a kind of gamified test of your numerical and cognitive ability" alongside situational judgement scenarios and numerical and verbal reasoning. Separately, UK candidate write-ups name switchChallenge and a chat-based situational judgement exercise called chatAssess — both Aon product names a candidate would only meet if an Aon battery were actually administered. That is what makes the Aon attribution multi-source rather than a single article.

Two honest limits on that. The press source is from 2021 and describes work begun in 2018; the most recent corroboration we found is a write-up about the 2025 UK cycle, and we found no 2026-cycle confirmation. And the chain linking switchChallenge specifically to Morgan Stanley runs through prep sites — eFinancialCareers gives Aon, Aon's own product line gives switchChallenge, and only prep sites connect the name to Morgan Stanley directly. We have not seen anything saying the arrangement ended, but nobody has confirmed it continues either.

One more thing, because it causes more confusion on this employer than any other. Morgan Stanley is not J.P. Morgan. They are different firms with different assessment histories — JPMorgan's pymetrics stage is documented separately on this site and has been retired — and almost every search result pairing "Morgan Stanley" with pymetrics is actually about JPMorgan Chase. Do not import anything from one onto the other.

Spring Insight and Early Insights (EMEA)

Earlier-year insight programs; a 2027 ISG & MSIM Spring Insight Programme in Frankfurt was live on the official ATS. Morgan Stanley's EMEA Early Insight FAQ describes school and university outreach including a Mixed Open Day for year 13 students and the three-day "Step In, Step Up" insight program for female students in years 12 and 13, and says it collaborates with schools in and around London.

Eligibility, in Morgan Stanley's own words

The EMEA FAQ states: "If you'd like to qualify for our entry-level programs, we prefer strong A-Level (or equivalent) results and a degree from a good university. We recruit candidates from across all academic disciplines." Further study is explicitly "not a prerequisite for any of our entry-level programs". The official 2027 Technology posting asks for a STEM background and familiarity with at least one programming language — Python, Java or C++.

How does the Morgan Stanley assessment work?

Morgan Stanley names no vendor anywhere, and that matters

Official source

We fetched and keyword-scanned the students-and-graduates hub, the interview-preparation page, the EMEA Early Insight FAQ, the live vacancy board and a full 2027 job posting. Occurrences of HireVue, psychometric, "online assessment", game, Aon, pymetrics, Arctic Shores and SHL across all of them: zero. The interview-preparation page describes interview formats in detail and still never mentions a test. So no claim on this page about a platform can be attributed to Morgan Stanley — only to press or to candidates.

The Aon attribution: one press source plus candidate product names

Multiple sources

eFinancialCareers reported on 28 September 2021 that Morgan Stanley "began working with Aon to develop tests" from 2018 and that the bank is known to source its tests from Aon, quoting a Morgan Stanley EMEA talent acquisition manager. That article has been republished on university career-center blogs, which is the same journalism rather than new evidence. What makes this multi-source is the second strand: candidate write-ups independently name switchChallenge and chatAssess, which are Aon product names. Morgan Stanley has never confirmed any of it.

Source: eFinancialCareers, what to expect from Morgan Stanley's psychometric tests (28 September 2021)

The reported components

Multiple sources

Candidate accounts of the UK online assessment list four things: a numerical reasoning test, a deductive or logical reasoning test, a situational judgement simulation delivered as a chat or instant-message exercise, and the switchChallenge. eFinancialCareers independently describes situational judgement questions "based on specific circumstances that Morgan Stanley employees are likely to come across", numerical and verbal reasoning, and the SwitchChallenge. Reported timings are short but they conflict across sources, so we do not state a question count or a duration as fact.

Source: AssessmentPass, Morgan Stanley UK online assessment (prep site); eFinancialCareers (2021)

What chatAssess actually is

Official source

Aon's own game-based-assessments brochure describes chatAssess as "a situational judgement questionnaire embedded into an instant messaging simulation for smart devices", and confirms that cut-e was acquired by Aon in May 2017 and operates as Aon Assessment Solutions. That document establishes what the product is. It does not establish the client relationship: its named case study is Rolls-Royce and it contains no mention of Morgan Stanley at all. We cite it for the product description only.

Source: Aon (cut-e) game-based assessments brochure — product identity only; its case study is Rolls-Royce, not Morgan Stanley

Not everyone sits the online assessment

Multiple sources

Coverage looks campus-specific and EMEA-weighted. Candidates who have written up off-cycle and experienced-hire processes — an Equity Research associate role, an investment banking off-cycle internship — describe short, traditional one-to-one interview rounds with no psychometric stage at all. Do not assume a test is coming just because you applied to Morgan Stanley.

The technology track reportedly diverges

Single source

Candidates applying to technology analyst and software engineering roles report a timed coding test instead of the psychometric battery — commonly a couple of problems auto-graded on hidden test cases, with some Indian campus drives adding computer-science and aptitude multiple-choice sections. We could not verify this against a primary source, so treat it as a single-source report and check what your invitation names.

The HireVue video interview

Multiple sources

Lafayette College's career center describes Morgan Stanley's HireVue as one-way and recorded, three to five questions, about 30 seconds to prepare and roughly 1.5 minutes to record each answer, around 30 minutes end to end, and reports it across investment banking, wealth management and technology. It states explicitly that situational judgement questions and brainteasers are not commonly part of Morgan Stanley's HireVue format — which is unusual for a bank. No Morgan Stanley page and no HireVue case study names Morgan Stanley, so this stays at "candidates report".

Source: Lafayette College Gateway Career Center, Morgan Stanley HireVue questions (January 2025)

No pymetrics and no Arctic Shores

Multiple sources

We searched specifically for both. Arctic Shores does not list Morgan Stanley among its clients and no candidate report names it. Every search result pairing Morgan Stanley with pymetrics turned out to be about JPMorgan Chase. If you were sent here to practice pymetrics games or Arctic Shores tasks for Morgan Stanley, nothing supports that — those belong to other employers.

Source: Targeted searches for pymetrics and Arctic Shores at Morgan Stanley, 11 September 2026

Prep sites disagree about the provider — only Aon has press backing

Single source

Several preparation sites assert a different test provider for Morgan Stanley, sometimes with specific item counts. We could not trace any of that to a primary source: no press article, no vendor page and no candidate report supports it, and the sites appear to copy each other. The only vendor attribution with press backing is Aon, so Aon is the only one this page names.

Source: Prep-site claims reviewed 11 September 2026; untraceable to any primary source

Nothing evidences a personality or behavioral game battery

Multiple sources

The reported components are cognitive and situational judgement only. No source describes Morgan Stanley using the kind of behavioral-profiling game battery that pymetrics or Arctic Shores sell. The one thing anybody calls "gamified" here is the switchChallenge, and that is a timed reasoning task.

What happens in the Morgan Stanley hiring process?

EMEA campus programs: the path most of this evidence describes

This is the route the Aon reports are about, and the one the live 2027 slate is weighted toward.

  1. 1Apply through morganstanley.tal.net with a CV and, for many programs, a cover letter. Choose deliberately — the number of programs you can apply to per recruiting year is capped, and in EMEA the cap is six opportunities, three full-time and three internship.
  2. 2If your program uses it, an online assessment invitation follows. Candidates report an Aon battery: numerical reasoning, deductive or logical reasoning, a chat-based situational judgement exercise and the switchChallenge. Morgan Stanley does not name the vendor or publish the components.
  3. 3A HireVue one-way recorded video interview is reported as a separate early screen — about three to five questions, roughly 30 minutes end to end.
  4. 4First-round interview by phone, video or in person, built around your CV. Morgan Stanley says it could be competency, strengths based, skills based or technical.
  5. 5Final round: a Superday in the US or an assessment center in the UK and EMEA — back-to-back interviews in one day with assessors from associate through managing director.
  6. 6Offer. Recruiting is rolling, so the earlier you are in the cycle the better.

The video interview, in detail

This is the stage with the most consistent reporting across regions and divisions, and the one we have a dedicated question page for.

  1. 1One-way and recorded: no interviewer, no second chance at a question once you start it.
  2. 2Reported at three to five questions, about 30 seconds to prepare each answer and roughly 1.5 minutes to record it, around 30 minutes in total.
  3. 3Mostly behavioral and motivational: why Morgan Stanley, why this division, walk me through your CV, and "tell me about a time" prompts on leadership, conflict, teamwork and a challenge you overcame.
  4. 4Investment banking candidates report at least one lighter technical or markets-awareness question — a stock pitch, a basic valuation concept, a trend you have been following.
  5. 5Reported as not typically including brainteasers or situational judgement items, unlike some peer banks. Do not over-prepare for those at the expense of your examples.
  6. 6We keep a researched list of reported Morgan Stanley interview questions at /hirevue/questions/morgan-stanley, and a general recorded-answer trainer at /mock-interviews.

What Morgan Stanley itself says about interviews

The interview-preparation page is the most substantive official document on this process, and it is worth reading closely precisely because it says nothing about tests.

  1. 1Interviews "could be competency, strengths based, skills based or technical" — expect to be asked about situations where you used particular skills, or to demonstrate what you are good at and what inspires you.
  2. 2Know your resume: "Be able to articulate everything you've listed without reading or referring to it."
  3. 3Motivation for the industry, the firm and the specific division. A passion for learning and being part of a collaborative team is called out as imperative.
  4. 4Commercial awareness: pick one or two areas of the industry you can discuss with knowledge and conviction, and understand how regulation and markets affect them. Breadth is less useful than depth here.
  5. 5Process over answers: "We don't always expect candidates to have the right answer during an interview — we're interested in seeing how you work through a scenario."
  6. 6Prepare specific questions to ask, and avoid generic ones. Know the five core values: do the right thing, put clients first, lead with exceptional ideas, commit to diversity and inclusion, give back.

Final round: Superday and assessment center

Format varies by division, and the group-exercise detail is weaker evidence than the rest of this page.

  1. 1Back-to-back interviews in a single day with assessors of varying seniority, from associate through managing director.
  2. 2Division-specific technical questions, deeper than anything at the video stage.
  3. 3UK and EMEA campus candidates report a final assessment center, and some accounts describe a group exercise built around allocating a limited budget across competing projects. This is not confirmed by Morgan Stanley and comes from third-party guides rather than from a primary candidate report we could read — treat it as a possibility to have thought about, not a certainty to rehearse.
  4. 4Some roles add a case study, written exercise or presentation, with questioning afterward.
  5. 5Off-cycle and experienced-hire candidates report a different shape entirely: no online assessment, short one-to-one rounds, and heavier technical weighting — logical exercises, mental math, and in Equity Research a modeling case and an investment thesis. Those reports emphasize that clarity of argument counted for almost as much as content.

When is the Morgan Stanley assessment?

Morgan Stanley recruits on a rolling basis and publishes no closing dates on its own vacancy pages — we fetched the live board on 11 September 2026 and found zero occurrences of "deadline" or "closing date" across 125 live results. That makes applying early more useful than tracking a date, and it makes the date shown inside your own application portal the only one that binds you.

CycleApplication datesLikely assessment windowEvidence

As of 11 September 2026 the official campus board carried 2027 Summer Analyst, Full-Time Analyst, Industrial Placement, Off-Cycle and Spring Insight programs across London, Paris, Frankfurt or Munich, Madrid, Milan, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Dubai and Hong Kong, plus Americas locations. Because review is rolling, a program can effectively fill before any notional date.

The application cap, by regionn/an/aOfficial source

Morgan Stanley caps how many programs you can apply to per recruiting year, and the cap is regional. The official portal states: up to nine opportunities in the Americas (three full-time, three intern, three off-cycle), six in EMEA (three full-time, three internship), five in India, and three in the rest of Asia. Treat your applications as a limited budget and decide the division and location before you submit.

This date circulates widely on graduate job boards, with penultimate-year eligibility for students graduating in 2027. Morgan Stanley's own board publishes no closing date at all, and the board hosting the date could not be fetched directly. We are including it because you will meet it elsewhere and should know its status: unverified. Overall process durationn/an/aSingle source

Some candidate-report aggregators put the overall process at about four to six weeks, while full campus cycles from application to offer commonly run several months. Morgan Stanley publishes no end-to-end timeline, and speed varies sharply by division and by whether the role is a structured campus program or an off-cycle opening. These aggregator pages are the weakest tier of evidence on this page.

How to practice for the Morgan Stanley assessment

Work out which stages actually apply to you before you prepare anything, because the answer varies more at Morgan Stanley than at most banks. EMEA campus candidates are the ones the Aon reports describe. Off-cycle and experienced-hire candidates report no online assessment at all and go straight to interviews with technicals, mental math and modeling cases. Technology candidates report a coding test instead of a psychometric battery. Your invitation email settles it — nothing on Morgan Stanley's own site will.

If you are being tested, prepare by format rather than by module name. Nobody publishes Morgan Stanley's configuration, and the reported components — a fast numerical test, a deductive or rule-finding test, a chat-based situational judgement exercise, and the switchChallenge — are common Aon formats, so timed practice on those demands is the efficient bet. Our practice metrics track your own improvement; Morgan Stanley publishes no scoring model and no cutoff.

And give the video interview its own session. Recorded answers and timed reasoning tasks are different skills, and the reported Morgan Stanley video stage rewards preparation more than most — three to five questions means each one carries a lot of weight.

Step 1

Confirm which stages apply to you

EMEA campus program: an Aon-style online assessment is reported, plus a video interview. Off-cycle or experienced hire: candidate reports describe interviews only. Technology: a coding test is reported instead. US campus: the video interview is reported, but almost all the psychometric evidence is EMEA, so whether a Superday candidate sits a battery at all is genuinely unestablished.

Step 2

Spend your applications deliberately

The cap is regional — nine opportunities in the Americas, six in EMEA, five in India, three in the rest of Asia. Pick the division and location before you submit, not after, and apply early: recruiting is rolling and no closing date is published.

Step 3

Build a timed baseline on the reported formats

One run of Switch Challenge shows whether rapid rule-switching under a clock is a weak spot; Digit Challenge and Grid Challenge cover the numerical-speed and rule-finding demands. Aon-style numerical work rewards finding the right figure fast rather than elaborate calculation, and deductive tasks reward forming a hypothesis quickly and testing it.

Step 4

Prepare the situational judgement exercise by thinking, not drilling

We have no simulator for a chat-based SJT, and pretending otherwise would not help you. Instead, rehearse the judgment it tests: when a junior analyst should escalate versus handle something themselves, how to prioritize competing requests from senior people, how to flag an error, and how to communicate bad news early. Answer as the analyst you would actually want working for you.

Step 5

Record your video answers once before the real thing

Prepare concise spoken answers for why Morgan Stanley, why this division, a walk-through of your CV, and two or three behavioral examples on leadership, conflict and teamwork. If you are applying to investment banking, have one markets view or stock pitch ready. Reports say brainteasers and SJT items are not typically part of it, so do not spend your preparation there. Our reported question list is at /hirevue/questions/morgan-stanley.

Step 6

Use Morgan Stanley's own interview guidance as a checklist

Be able to articulate everything on your resume without referring to it. Pick one or two areas of the industry you can discuss with conviction. Prepare specific questions to ask. Know the five core values. And remember the page's own line that they are interested in how you work through a scenario, not only whether you land the right answer.

Step 7

Set up real test conditions

Quiet room, laptop or desktop, notifications off, one sitting, and a wired connection if you have one. Check your camera and microphone before the video stage rather than during it.

Morgan Stanley assessment FAQ

Does Morgan Stanley use Aon assessments?

Candidates and press report that it does, for EMEA campus programs. eFinancialCareers reported in September 2021 that Morgan Stanley began working with Aon on its tests from 2018, and candidate write-ups name Aon products such as the switchChallenge and a chat-based situational judgement exercise. Morgan Stanley itself names no assessment vendor on any of its careers pages or 2027 job postings — we checked. And the evidence has a date on it: the press report is from 2021 and the most recent candidate corroboration we found covers the 2025 UK cycle, so check what your own invitation names.

Does Morgan Stanley use pymetrics or Arctic Shores games?

There is no evidence that it uses either. Arctic Shores does not list Morgan Stanley among its clients and no candidate report names it. Every search result pairing Morgan Stanley with pymetrics turned out to be about JPMorgan Chase — a different firm, whose pymetrics stage is documented separately on this site and has been retired. If you have been told to practice pymetrics games for Morgan Stanley, that advice is almost certainly a mix-up between the two banks.

Is Morgan Stanley the same as J.P. Morgan?

No. They are separate firms with separate hiring processes and separate assessment histories, and the name similarity is the single biggest source of bad information about Morgan Stanley assessments. Nothing documented about JPMorgan's process — its vendor, its games, its deadlines — should be applied to a Morgan Stanley application.

What is in the Morgan Stanley online assessment?

Candidates report four components: a numerical reasoning test, a deductive or logical reasoning test, a situational judgement exercise delivered as a chat or instant-message simulation, and the switchChallenge. Morgan Stanley publishes none of this, and reported timings conflict across sources, so we do not quote a question count or a duration as fact. Your invitation email is the only reliable description.

Does every Morgan Stanley candidate take an online test?

No, on the evidence we have. The reports describing an online assessment are campus-program and EMEA-weighted. Candidates who wrote up off-cycle and experienced-hire processes describe short one-to-one interview rounds with no psychometric stage at all, and technology candidates report a coding test instead. Whether US Superday candidates sit a battery is unestablished.

What is the Morgan Stanley HireVue like?

Candidates report a one-way recorded interview of about three to five questions, with roughly 30 seconds to prepare and about 1.5 minutes to record each answer, around 30 minutes end to end, used across investment banking, wealth management and technology. Questions are mostly behavioral and motivational, with one lighter technical or markets question for investment banking. Reports note it does not typically include brainteasers or situational judgement items. Our researched question list is at /hirevue/questions/morgan-stanley.

When is the Morgan Stanley application deadline?

Morgan Stanley publishes no closing date on its own vacancy pages and recruits on a rolling basis — we fetched the live board and found no deadline field anywhere on it. Third-party job boards list 19 October 2026 for the 2027 London Investment Banking and Global Capital Markets Summer Analyst Programmes; we could not verify that on an official page, so treat the date in your own application portal as authoritative and apply early regardless.

How many Morgan Stanley programs can I apply to?

It is capped per recruiting year and the cap is regional: up to nine opportunities in the Americas (three full-time, three intern, three off-cycle), six in EMEA (three full-time, three internship), five in India, and three in the rest of Asia. Choose deliberately.

Where can I practice for the Morgan Stanley assessment?

Only one reported component maps to a simulator here: the switchChallenge, at /aon/switch-challenge, with the wider Aon formats at /aon. The chat-based situational judgement exercise has no practice equivalent on this site, and we would rather tell you that than point you at something unrelated. None of our routes is Morgan Stanley's actual battery — they train the same formats.
