There is no game-based assessment, and that is the headline
Official sourceHSBC's own description of its online assessment is "work-based assessments to display your cognitive and behavioural skills", using "different question types and formats, including audio or video content, mock emails, data tables and graphs, or written articles", answered with short written and video responses. That is a business simulation. No timed cognitive mini-game, no trait-inference game, and no gamified battery appears in any HSBC source or any candidate account we could verify.

Cappfinity is established from HSBC's own linked tools
Official sourceHSBC names no vendor in the text of its careers pages. But its application guide links candidates to two HSBC-branded practice tools, hsbc.preparationplus.com and hsbcskillsmatcher.preparationplus.com, and both pages describe themselves as "Powered by Cappfinity". That chain — HSBC's own page to an HSBC-branded property to the vendor's own self-identification — is why this is official-tier rather than a prep-site inference.

HSBC's own free practice tools are the closest thing to the real assessment
Official sourceThe Candidate Zone is a practice zone; the Skills Matcher helps you work out which HSBC role fits you. Both are free, both are linked from HSBC's own application guide, and both are built by the same vendor as the assessment you will actually sit. Use them first. We say that plainly because it is true, and nothing on this site substitutes for practicing on the vendor's own engine.

The video interview platform is Modern Hire, now owned by HireVue
Official sourceHSBC's live "Application hints and tips" page and both of its candidate PDFs say the same thing: "HSBC has engaged with a Video Interviewing technology partner called Modern Hire", with on-demand capability in one PDF and live video capability in the other. HireVue acquired Modern Hire in May 2023, so an HSBC video interview today runs on HireVue-owned technology. Prep sites that flatly say "HSBC uses HireVue" land on the right corporate parent but name a product HSBC's own documents do not use. Note that the PDFs carry 2020 creation dates while remaining HSBC's current linked guidance, so the branding you meet may differ from the wording HSBC prints.

You can usually re-take a video answer — but not always
Official sourceHSBC's on-demand PDF states: "Typically, you will have an opportunity to review the questions and re-take your answer however this may not always be the case. The on-screen instructions will alert you to this as appropriate." That directly contradicts the common prep-site line that HSBC allows no retakes. Read the on-screen instructions before you start, because they are what tell you which rule applies to your sitting.

One online sitting or two? HSBC says one
Single sourceHSBC officially describes a three-step process with a single 90-minute online assessment stage, and names no sections and no question counts. Some prep sites describe this as two separate sittings — an "immersive assessment" and then a "job simulation" released only to those who pass — with named sections and exact question counts. None of that is confirmed by HSBC or by any candidate report we could verify, so treat it as unconfirmed. It changes nothing about how you prepare either way.

The prep sites contradict each other on vendor, which is itself the finding
Official sourceOne prep site assigns the online assessment to Cappfinity and the video stage to HireVue; another assigns the assessment to SHL and the simulation to Cappfinity; a third assigns both to Cappfinity; a fourth names no vendor at all. Four sources, four different answers, and none of them cites an HSBC page. That pattern is inference, not reporting. HSBC's own materials name exactly two vendors — Cappfinity by way of its linked tools, and Modern Hire for video — and this page names only those two.

SHL is not evidenced as HSBC's vendor
No evidence foundNo official HSBC page, no vendor page and no candidate report we found names SHL. The widely repeated "HSBC Apta values assessment" claim for experienced hires is prep-site material with no source behind it. SHL-style numerical and verbal reasoning practice is genuinely useful for HSBC's scenario-embedded data tables and articles — that is a statement about format, not about who built the assessment.

Arctic Shores does not name HSBC, and neither should anyone else
No evidence foundThe line "HSBC uses Arctic Shores for analyst roles" circulates widely. We fetched Arctic Shores' own case-studies page and homepage and searched for HSBC: zero mentions. Arctic Shores does not claim HSBC as a client anywhere we could find, and the prep sites do not actually make the claim either — the "Arctic Shores" strings on their HSBC pages are site-wide navigation boilerplate. The claim has no locatable source at all.

Assessment centre, or Super Day in the US
Official sourceHSBC's stage three runs about three hours: "Complete exercises to further demonstrate your skills and interest in the area you've applied to", where candidates "meet HSBC employees and complete different interviews and exercises". HSBC's own text names the US variant: "Assessment centre (Super Days in the US)". For insight and work experience programs, HSBC says stage three is usually an online interview instead.
