Use the on-screen tool
Published college instructions allow an on-screen calculator for math and prohibit a personal calculator. Our math practice includes a basic four-function tool. Check your own testing instructions for availability in other subjects.
Write the relationship first
A calculator cannot choose the right quantity or unit for you. Identify what the question asks, write the relationship, estimate the likely size, then calculate. Keep extra decimal places until the final rounding step.
Worked example
A container holds 1.5 liters. You pour out 20% of its contents. How many milliliters remain?
Show the answer and method
1,200 mL.
Eighty percent remains. Calculate 1.5 × 0.80 = 1.2 liters, then multiply by 1,000 to get 1,200 milliliters. Subtracting 20 milliliters confuses a percentage with a volume.
