Methods and worked examples

These original introductory examples are separate from the scored practice bank. Open a skill to see the method, solution and a common mistake.

Verbal analogies

Turn the first pair into a short sentence. Apply exactly the same relationship, in the same direction, to the second pair. For two blanks, test each offered pair in both places.

Watch for: Words can be related without sharing the required relationship. Check the order as well as the meaning.

Practice verbal analogies

Example

Complete both blanks: ____ is to hive as bird is to ____. Options: bee / nest; honey / wing; swarm / feather; flower / branch.

Solution: Bee / nest. A bee lives in a hive; a bird lives in a nest. Both pairs have the same animal-to-home relationship. Honey is produced in a hive, but a bird does not have the same relationship to a wing.

Numerical calculations

Identify the operations before calculating. Keep fractions exact where practical, apply the order of operations, and substitute an algebraic answer back into the original equation.

Watch for: A percentage uses its stated base. A 20% decrease followed by a 20% increase does not return a value to its starting point.

Example

What is 18% of 250, minus 3²?

Solution: 18% of 250 is 45. The square 3² is 9. Therefore 45 − 9 = 36. Squaring the final difference would answer a different question.

Numerical sequences

Test a simple rule against every supplied value. Try differences, ratios and alternating streams. In a number grid, check whether the same relationship works in each completed row or column.

Watch for: A rule that fits only the final pair is not enough. Check the beginning and any separate streams before choosing.

Example

Which number continues 3, 8, 18, 38, …?

Solution: 78. Double the previous term and add 2: 3 × 2 + 2 = 8; 8 × 2 + 2 = 18; 18 × 2 + 2 = 38; 38 × 2 + 2 = 78. The differences also double: 5, 10, 20, then 40.

Abstract reasoning

Separate the features: shape, count, position, orientation and fill. Find what changes and what stays fixed. Test the rule along all complete rows or columns before filling the gap.

Watch for: Following one feature can leave another wrong. A choice with the correct count but the wrong shape does not complete the matrix.

Practice abstract reasoning

Example

In a three-column matrix, each row contains one, two, then three copies of its shape. The first row uses circles, the second triangles and the third squares. What completes the third row?

Solution: Three squares, using the same outline and placement pattern as the completed rows. The row sets the shape; the column sets how many copies appear.

Space relations

Anchor one face and fold its neighbors around it. Identify opposite faces first, then track the orientation of marks. Rotate the whole solid mentally; do not reflect or rearrange individual faces.

Watch for: Opposite faces cannot meet at one visible corner. Adjacency alone is not enough when arrows or asymmetric marks are present: their orientations must agree too.

Example

A cube net has A–B–C–D in one horizontal strip, with E directly above B and F directly below B. Which face is opposite A?

Solution: C. Fold the strip around the cube: A, B, C and D become the four side faces. Faces two positions apart are opposite, giving A opposite C and B opposite D. E and F close the top and bottom.

Start with the full test name, publisher and module names on your invitation. “DAT” can mean several unrelated tests; this guide concerns Differential Aptitude Tests, not the Dental Admission Test.

Older DAT, DAT-5 or guidance editions

Older and country-specific editions can include mechanical reasoning, speed and accuracy, spelling or language usage. Their module combinations and timing vary. A timed paper invitation is not the standard NG format.

Ask the test administrator which edition and sections apply before treating a full practice sitting as a match. Pearson’s Spanish DAT-5 listing, for example, describes seven aptitudes and manual administration.

You may only need some modules

In a Pearson-published employer account, CRAMIF describes using verbal analogies, numerical sequences and abstract reasoning for case-manager recruitment. Blackhawk Technical College’s 2025–26 guidance names abstract reasoning and space relations. These illustrate different selections; they do not establish what your employer or institution requires.

  • No countdown: practice is untimed. Elapsed time helps you review your work without imposing a deadline.
  • Answer before moving on: check your choice before submitting it. Submitted answers cannot be changed and questions cannot be skipped.
  • Original adaptation: our full and single-module practice start at a middle level, moving up after a correct answer and down after an incorrect one. Our three difficulty bands are editorial, not Pearson-calibrated levels.
  • Early finish: you can end a sitting and save a partial practice record. Results retain the counts of unanswered and unreached questions.

Pearson’s NG overview lists 15 questions and approximately 12 minutes per module, with standard untimed delivery. This is an estimate, not a hard limit. Administrator settings and equipment rules can differ. Confirm any calculator, paper, timing and accessibility arrangements before the official test.

Read accuracy alongside difficulty

Start with the skill breakdown: how much you completed, which questions you answered correctly and the difficulty levels you encountered. Review the explanation for every mistake before choosing the next drill.

  • A partial sitting is still partial. Correct answers out of a few attempted questions do not replace completing the planned module.
  • Adaptive percentages are not equivalent scores. Different answer paths can present different difficulties. A lower raw percentage on harder questions does not automatically mean worse ability.
  • Practice goals are learning targets. Completing the work accurately, including demanding questions, is more useful than chasing an unsupported pass prediction.
  • Repeated questions can feel easier. Review familiarity alongside performance. Saved attempts remain available, and progress charts appear only when there is comparable repeat evidence.

The official assessment uses difficulty-sensitive scoring and a selected norm group. This product does not calculate Pearson theta, percentiles, sten or stanine scores, or predict an employer’s decision.

Make a focused preparation plan

  1. Check the invitation. Identify your version, language and required modules. Follow the administrator’s equipment and test-day rules.
  2. Try the relevant short drills. Note whether mistakes come from an unfamiliar method, a calculation error or a missed visual constraint.
  3. Repair one error type at a time. Write out the relationship or rule. Explain why your chosen distractor fails, then try another set.
  4. Complete a module without help. Make each decision before moving on. Review accuracy and difficulty together once you finish.
  5. Rehearse the required combination. Use the full sitting if all five skills are relevant. Otherwise, practice the selected modules and revisit weak skills rather than adding unrelated tests.
