Know the section

Standard Decision Making has 35 questions in 37 minutes, following 90 seconds of instructions. Some questions ask for one answer; others ask you to mark five statements Yes or No. A basic on-screen calculator is available.

Read what the question requires before solving it. A conclusion that must follow, an arrangement that could work and an argument that best supports a proposal call for different reasoning.

Methods and worked examples

Open a topic to work through an original teaching example. The examples isolate a technique; timed practice asks you to choose and apply it under pressure.

Syllogisms and Yes/No conclusions

Use only the supplied rules. Draw a quick set diagram or translate each rule into a short statement, then test each conclusion independently. Select Yes only when the conclusion follows. A possible conclusion is not enough; No can mean that the evidence leaves it undecided.

Common mistake: Reversing a rule. “All drivers have first-aid training” does not establish that everyone with first-aid training is a driver. Follow the official tutorial’s definitions of quantifiers rather than assuming everyday meanings.

A center has 24 volunteers. Every volunteer who drives the minibus has first-aid training. No volunteer under 18 drives the minibus. At least two volunteers drive it. Does it follow that at least two volunteers have first-aid training?

Yes

  1. The premise explicitly establishes at least two drivers, and every driver belongs to the first-aid-trained group.
  2. It therefore establishes at least two first-aid-trained volunteers. No further assumptions are needed.
  3. It would not follow that every trained volunteer drives, or that nobody under 18 has first-aid training. Those relationships were not supplied.
Logical puzzles

Make a small ordered list, grid or diagram. Place fixed information first, then join linked conditions. Test the most restrictive clue before trying complete arrangements. Distinguish “must be true” from “could be true”: one valid arrangement only proves possibility.

Common mistake: Finding an arrangement that fits most clues but failing to check a negative condition such as “not last” or “not next to.”

Ada, Ben, Cara and Dev have one appointment each at 9, 10, 11 or 12, with exactly one appointment in each time slot. Ben is immediately after Ada. Cara is before Ada. Dev is not last. When is Ada’s appointment?

  1. Ada cannot be at 9 because Cara must be earlier. Ada cannot be at 12 because Ben must be immediately after her.
  2. If Ada were at 10, Ben would be at 11 and Cara at 9, leaving Dev at 12, which is forbidden.
  3. Ada must be at 11, followed by Ben at 12. Cara and Dev can occupy 9 and 10 in either order. Both arrangements satisfy the clues.
Arguments and assumptions

Identify the exact proposal and what the question asks you to evaluate. A strong argument bears directly on that proposal and gives a significant reason for or against it. Treat stated evidence as given for the task, but do not add evidence or let a personal preference substitute for relevance.

Common mistake: Choosing a dramatic or agreeable statement that does not address the decision. An argument can be relevant without proving that a policy will always succeed.

A library is considering evening opening to improve access for people who cannot visit during the day. Which supports that goal more directly: “The library building has an attractive entrance” or “In a pilot, 120 residents who could not attend during daytime hours used the evening service”?

The evening pilot evidence

  1. The specified goal is access for residents unable to visit during the day.
  2. The pilot measures use by that exact group. The appearance of the entrance does not explain whether longer opening hours will help them.
  3. This does not establish that every possible extension is affordable or effective. Those would require additional information.
Interpreting information

Translate the claim into a check against the data. Keep the denominator, population and time period attached to every figure. Distinguish a survey response from actual behavior, a relationship from a cause, and a sample finding from a claim about everyone.

Common mistake: Comparing percentages as though they were counts, or assuming that a reported intention guarantees a future action.

A survey of 200 cyclists and a separate group of 300 walkers asked about a proposed travel app. Of the cyclists, 70% said they would use it; 40% of the walkers said they would. Did more surveyed cyclists than surveyed walkers say they would use the app?

  1. Apply each percentage to its own group: 0.70 × 200 = 140 and 0.40 × 300 = 120.
  2. The conclusion concerns these survey responses, so the counts support it.
  3. The survey does not prove that 260 people will actually use the app, or that the same percentages apply to all cyclists and walkers.
Venn diagrams and overlapping groups

Label each region and place shared membership before exclusive membership. For two groups, the number in at least one is the first total plus the second total minus the overlap. Read “only,” “both,” “neither” and “at least one” carefully before calculating.

Common mistake: Counting the shared region twice, or confusing everyone in a group with only the people outside its overlap.

Among 100 club members, 62 attend a language group and 48 attend a music group. Twenty attend both. How many attend neither?

  1. Language only = 62 − 20 = 42. Music only = 48 − 20 = 28.
  2. At least one group = 42 + 20 + 28 = 90. Therefore neither = 100 − 90 = 10.
  3. Check that the four disjoint regions add to 100. Adding 62 and 48 without removing the overlap would count the same 20 members twice.
Probability and statistical reasoning

Define the event before choosing an operation. Use a complement for “at least one” when it is simpler. For successive events, multiply conditional probabilities and update the available outcomes after a draw without replacement. Add alternatives only after checking whether they overlap.

Common mistake: Treating dependent draws as independent, or assuming an event becomes more likely merely because it did not happen in previous independent trials.

A bag contains 4 red and 6 blue counters. Two counters are drawn at random without replacement. What is the probability that both are red?

  1. The probability that the first counter is red is 4/10.
  2. After a red counter is removed, 3 red counters remain among 9 counters. The conditional probability for the second red is 3/9.
  3. Multiply: (4/10) × (3/9) = 12/90 = 2/15. Using 4/10 again would incorrectly assume replacement.

Separate evidence from assumptions

Must be true

Try to find a counterexample that obeys every premise but makes the conclusion false. One valid counterexample is enough to show that the conclusion does not have to follow.

Could be true

Find at least one arrangement that obeys every rule. You do not need to show that it is the only possible arrangement.

Relevant argument

Match the evidence to the precise proposal and its stated goal. An appealing fact about a different issue is not stronger just because it sounds convincing.

Unsupported claim

Do not turn a percentage into a count without its base, extend a sample to everyone, or infer a cause from a change observed over time.

Quantifiers need particular care. The official tutorial defines terms including “some,” “most,” “few” and “either.” Use those test-specific definitions when working official questions; do not silently replace them with a different rule you learned elsewhere.

Complete every statement in a Yes/No item

Treat each statement as a fresh question about the same evidence. A Yes for one statement does not require a No for another. Check that all five have an answer before leaving the item.

The official test awards one mark for a correct single-answer item and up to two marks for a multiple-statement item, with partial credit possible. Our raw practice feedback explains its own marking. It is not an official mark conversion or a prediction of a 300–900 result.

For conclusion questions, No does not always mean that the statement is false. It also covers conclusions that might be true but are not established by the information. Identify which case applies when reviewing your reasoning.

Use diagrams where they save work

  1. Keep the representation small. Use initials in an ordered list for a scheduling puzzle, circles for overlapping groups or a two-way table for categories. Copying the whole question wastes time.
  2. Record the rules, including negatives. A mark showing “not next to” can prevent a near-complete arrangement from being mistaken for a valid answer.
  3. Keep possible arrangements separate. Label branches if more than one arrangement remains. Do not combine two alternative worlds into one conclusion.
  4. Use arithmetic only when needed. A calculator helps with awkward probabilities or proportions. A simple fraction or a clear logical exclusion may be faster to handle directly.

Practice allocating time

Thirty-seven minutes averages about 63 seconds per question. A short argument and a five-statement logical item will not take the same amount of time. Use the average to monitor overall progress, not as a fixed allowance for each item.

  1. Start with untimed drills. Learn to explain why an answer follows and why the alternatives do not. Keep a brief error note: reversed rule, missed constraint, wrong denominator or unsupported assumption.
  2. Then rehearse the whole section. Practice switching between question types. Check the instruction again after moving from Yes/No statements to a single-answer item.
  3. Flag and move on when stuck. Give your best answer, then return if time remains. The official test has no negative marking; unanswered items cannot earn credit.
  4. Review omissions and slow correct answers. A method may be accurate but too costly. Compare a diagram, elimination or direct calculation on a new example rather than memorizing an old answer.

Common questions

How long is UCAT Decision Making?

The current standard section has 35 questions in 37 minutes, with a separate 90-second instruction period. The questions vary in the amount of reading and working required.

What does No mean in a Yes/No conclusion question?

Choose No when the conclusion does not follow from the supplied information. It may be contradicted, or it may remain uncertain. Do not choose Yes just because the conclusion is possible.

What question types should I prepare for?

Practice syllogisms, logical puzzles, arguments and assumptions, interpreting information, Venn diagrams, and probability or statistical reasoning. Read each question’s instruction; the same subject matter can ask for different kinds of judgement.

How is Decision Making marked?

In the official test, single-answer items are worth one mark and multiple-statement items up to two, with partial credit possible. Our original practice reports explain their own raw marking. They do not reproduce an official scaled score.

Can I revisit questions?

Within a section, use the navigator and flags to return to questions while time remains. You cannot go back to an earlier section after moving on in the full simulation. Feedback appears after finishing the attempt.
