TSA calls the Transportation Security Officer assessment the TSO Assessment Battery, or TAB. Its official recruitment material describes a computer-based test of image or X-ray interpretation aptitude. Recent candidates commonly report three visual tasks: connecting dots, matching images and matching flat edges to folded shapes.
The three task types below follow those reports. They are original practice, with our own counts and timing. Candidate reports differ on section limits and order, so your invitation and on-screen instructions take priority.
Is this the old TSA CBT with X-ray bags and English questions?
This practice focuses on the reported visual task format. It does not include a legacy X-ray image or English question bank. The phrase “X-ray interpretation aptitude” in an invitation does not, by itself, establish which tasks will appear. Do not use Federal Air Marshal or Oxford Thinking Skills Assessment material as a TSO test blueprint.

Instructions are untimed. Full practice uses separate section clocks, with no time carried over. Its answers and explanations stay hidden until you finish. Short drills show feedback as you learn. Our 26-minute total is a training format, not a claim about a universal official test length.
Connect the dots
Read the rule before moving. For an alternating trail, keep the two sequences separate: 1 → A → 2 → B → 3 → C. Look for the next label while moving to the current one, then click its center. The lines show your route; their crossings do not change the order.
Watch for: Continuing with the next number when the rule asks for a letter, or clicking a nearby label without reading it. Build clean trails before trying to move faster.

Image matching
Keep the target in view. Compare its overall outline, then the internal lines, dots and their positions. Eliminate clear differences first, then confirm the remaining drawing feature by feature. A reflected or rotated drawing is not an exact match.
Watch for: Choosing an option that has the same parts but a different orientation. Fast guessing can increase attempts while reducing correct matches; review accuracy and speed together.

2D-to-3D folding
Find the shared reference face and its direction mark in both views. Hold that face in place, then follow each neighboring face across its hinge. Trace the requested boundary to its final edge. Work one numbered edge at a time; two flat edges can meet at the same seam, so answer letters may repeat.
Watch for: Rotating the reference face without also rotating its direction mark. A face being on the correct side is not enough: its top and bottom edges must still match.

Match the blue face, corner dot and arrow direction. Numbers mark separate flat edges; two edges can join the same seam, so letters may be used more than once. Fold inward along the dashed lines.
Trace an edge in four steps
- Find the same marked face in the flat and folded views. Match the arrow or marked corner too; a plain square can be rotated several ways.
- Find the numbered edge and the face it belongs to. Identify the hinge joining that face to the reference face, or follow the chain of intervening faces.
- Fold one face at a time while keeping the shared hinge fixed. Track both endpoints of the numbered edge, rather than guessing from the face’s general location.
- Match its final endpoints to the lettered solid edge. Repeat independently for every numbered edge. Letters can repeat when boundaries join at a seam.
Use the label’s leader line to locate the exact edge. Solid boundaries and dashed folds have different meanings. A paper model can help you learn this at home; follow the proctor’s rules about aids in your actual appointment.
Build accuracy, then speed
- Learn each mechanic in a short drill. After an error, explain the exact missed detail or fold before trying again.
- Replay the task with new layouts. Keep your accuracy high while reducing hesitation. Familiar layouts can help rehearsal but do not establish performance on unfamiliar ones.
- Take full practice in a quiet setting. Start with a desktop or laptop and a comfortable pointer setup so diagrams and controls are easy to see.
- Compare like-for-like results. Read correct matches or edges together with attempted, unanswered and unreached work. A small amount of accurate work is different from sustained accuracy at speed.
Understand your practice score
Sequences show correct positions in your submitted trail. Matching shows exact choices and speed. Folding shows correct edge mappings, with a review of each diagram. Read each task separately to identify what needs work.
TSA’s public recruitment information mentions a cut score without publishing its value. Our goals are practice targets, not an official pass mark or a prediction of placement in a hiring category. Reports about guessing penalties conflict; follow the rules shown in your real assessment.
One TSA pass covers full practice and all three drill replays. If your account includes first free attempts, each drill can be tried once. Saved reviews remain available after a pass expires. A progress chart appears after a second comparable attempt.
Official appointment guidance
Schedule through the invitation issued after applying. Pearson says you can find the invitation through application tracking in USAJOBS and requires valid US-issued identification. Check your own confirmation for deadlines, ID requirements, accommodations and allowed aids.

Official sources establish the test name and administration. Direct candidate accounts describe the three visual mechanics, including multiple edge mappings per folding diagram. The timing and scoring details differ, so we do not treat them as an official blueprint.
