Methods and lessons

Open a topic to review the method, then practice applying it to a new question.

Use the meaning that fits the sentence

A familiar word can have several meanings. First restate the sentence using a simple replacement for the tested word. Then compare that replacement with the options.

Do not select a word merely because it belongs to the same topic. The correct option must preserve the meaning and fit the grammatical role of the original word.

“The instructions were concise.” Does concise most nearly mean brief, urgent, uncertain or repeated?

Answer: Brief.

Concise means expressed in few words without unnecessary detail. It does not tell us that the instructions are urgent, doubtful or repeated.

Use word parts as clues, then check the whole word

Common prefixes can indicate direction or meaning: pre- often means before, sub- often means under, and anti- often means against. A suffix can suggest whether a word names an action, person or quality.

Word parts are clues, not a guarantee. A word’s current meaning may not be obvious from its pieces. Check it against the context and the answer choices rather than forcing a guessed definition.

Separate a synonym from an association

“Cautious” and “fearful” can describe the same person, but they do not mean exactly the same thing. Cautious means careful about possible problems; fearful means afraid. Close alternatives often differ in strength, tone or purpose.

After selecting an answer, explain why the closest distractor is less accurate. This makes a review useful even when you initially guessed correctly.

Review vocabulary in small, mixed sets

For each unfamiliar word, save a short definition, one original sentence and a contrasting word. Revisit it later without looking at the definition, then use it in a different sentence.

Mix older words with new ones. Recognizing a familiar option in an unchanged question is easier than knowing the word independently; test both.

Common questions

Is there a complete official ASVAB word list?

The public official guidance describes the skills and provides examples; it does not publish the complete secure vocabulary bank. Learn broadly rather than treating a commercial list as the exact test content.
