Choose your starting point
- If the basics feel rusty: begin with fractions, percentages, signed numbers and simple equations, then take Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge drills.
- If your immediate goal is AFQT: include all four AFQT subjects, even if one of them already feels comfortable.
- If you have a particular occupation in mind: check its current qualification requirements and include the relevant technical subjects.
- If you do not yet know your weakest subject: take the ten short drills across several sessions before choosing where to concentrate.
Use a repeatable study session
- Recall one method from memory before opening your notes.
- Complete a short set without hints or a calculator.
- Review each miss and each lucky guess. Label the cause: knowledge, interpretation, calculation or timing.
- Write a brief correction in your own words, then solve a different example using that method.
- Return after a delay and check the skill on fresh material.
A flexible two-week starting plan
This is a starting structure, not a promise that two weeks is enough. Extend the learning phase if the foundations remain unreliable; shorten it only when fresh results support doing so.
- Days 1–2: sample the subjects and identify two or three priorities. Spread the drills out if you need more time.
- Days 3–6: repair the highest-impact foundations, while keeping a little vocabulary and reading practice in each session.
- Days 7–10: mix fresh questions across your weaker subjects and the technical areas relevant to your goals.
- Days 11–12: try AFQT subjects practice or a full simulation in the format closest to your appointment.
- Days 13–14: review the result, retest weak methods on fresh questions and confirm your test-day arrangements.
Mathematics quick reference
- Fraction of a quantity: multiply. Fraction remaining: subtract the used fraction from 1 before multiplying.
- Percentage: part ÷ whole × 100. Percentage change: change ÷ original amount × 100.
- Ratio a:b: the whole contains a + b parts. Scale both terms by the same factor.
- Mean: total ÷ count. Combined mean: combined total ÷ combined count.
- Distance = rate × time. For joint work, add the fractions of a job completed per unit of time.
- Rectangle area = lw. Triangle area = bh/2. Circle area = πr². Circumference = 2πr.
- Right triangle: a² + b² = c². Rectangular prism volume = lwh. Cylinder volume = πr²h.
- Slope = change in y ÷ change in x. Probability for equally likely outcomes = favorable ÷ total.
Build technical knowledge around relationships
For science, connect a structure or process to what it does. For electronics, trace circuit paths before inserting numbers. For auto and shop, learn a component or tool together with its purpose.
For mechanics, identify forces, pivots, directions and areas. For assembly, preserve each piece’s features while checking every connection. Drawings should help you reason, not become pictures whose answers you memorize.
Choose the correct full-test format
- Computer-format practice: 135 questions across ten sections. It uses current enlistment scored-item counts and no-tryout section clocks, totaling 197 maximum minutes. Our form is fixed, while official CAT-ASVAB adapts difficulty.
- Paper-format practice: 225 questions across nine sections and 149 testing minutes. Auto and Shop are combined. You can revisit questions within the active section.
- AFQT subjects practice: 55 questions across the four core sections, with 122 maximum minutes. It is our focused practice grouping, not a separate official examination.
- PiCAT: an official recruiter-arranged unproctored adaptive test without individual subtest clocks, followed by proctored verification. The untimed subject drills help build the relevant knowledge.
- School Career Exploration Program: a different administration that excludes Assembling Objects. Our subject drills remain useful, but the enlistment simulations are not exact school-format replicas.
Prepare for timing and navigation
In official CAT-ASVAB, submitting an answer locks it; you cannot go back. On paper, you may skip and review within the active subtest, but not work in other sections. Our corresponding practice modes preserve that distinction.
The computer-format maximum is the sum of section clocks, not a typical appointment duration. Official proctored CAT usually takes about two hours, and unscored tryout questions add time in selected sections. Our simulation excludes those tryouts.
Use timed practice without pausing or checking explanations. Leave time to review a paper section before its clock expires. Do not transfer paper guessing advice uncritically to adaptive CAT testing; follow the official preparation guidance for your format.
Before the official appointment
- Confirm whether you are taking CAT-ASVAB, paper enlistment ASVAB, school testing or PiCAT verification.
- Follow the testing office’s instructions for identification, arrival time and permitted belongings.
- Practice without a calculator. Confirm how scratch materials are provided for your administration.
- Arrange enough time for instructions and administration as well as the test itself.
- Use the last review session for familiar methods and practical arrangements, rather than assuming one more full practice score guarantees readiness.
Common questions
How much should I study each day?
Choose a session length you can sustain while still reviewing your mistakes. A focused short session with fresh follow-up questions is more informative than repeated long tests whose answers you remember. Increase time where your results show a specific need.
Should I take a full test before learning the basics?
A full test can reveal gaps, but ten short drills are usually a more manageable starting point. If fractions, vocabulary or other foundations are consistently difficult, repair those methods before spending another long sitting measuring the same gap.
Can I pause the timed simulation?
The clock continues while a timed section is active, including reloads or time in another tab. Use the short untimed drills when you need a session that can be interrupted. Follow the on-screen instructions for section transitions and recovery.
Does school ASVAB commit me to military service?
Participation in the school Career Exploration Program does not create a military-service obligation. It includes career exploration and has its own reporting and enlistment-use rules; your school can explain its arrangements.
What does an ASVAB pass cover?
One ASVAB pass covers this site’s ten subject drills, their replays and the combined ASVAB practice tests. It does not unlock other assessment categories. Your saved answers and explanations remain available without an active pass.
