Math Skills
Arithmetic, ratios & rates
Write the quantities and units first. Turn percentages into multipliers and work problems into rates. Combine the underlying quantities before finding an average.
Common mistake: Averaging speeds without accounting for time, or reversing a percentage by adding the same percentage.

Algebra, exponents & logarithms
Simplify before calculating. State any domain restrictions, isolate the unknown and substitute the result back into the original expression. Rewrite logarithms as powers.
Common mistake: Losing a negative sign, reversing an inequality incorrectly or admitting a value that makes a denominator zero.

Geometry & measurement
Sketch the figure and label known values. Distinguish linear, square and cubic units. With similar figures, square the length scale for area and cube it for volume.
Common mistake: Using the diameter as a radius or applying a length scale directly to an area.

Probability & data
Define the sample space. For successive draws, check whether an object is replaced. Distinguish ordered choices from unordered groups, and use a complement when it is shorter.
Common mistake: Treating dependent events as independent or counting the same group more than once.

Reading Comprehension
Finding the supported statement
Read for the central claim, then check each option against a specific sentence. A good paraphrase preserves the subject, time period and scope even when its wording changes.
Common mistake: Choosing a plausible statement that requires an extra fact the passage never supplies.
Practice this skillTo be eligible for same-day review, a report must arrive before noon with a complete supporting file. Eligible reports are reviewed in order of urgency. If the daily review capacity is reached, remaining reports move to the next working day.
Which statement is supported by the passage?
Drawing inferences
Distinguish what is stated from what must follow. Join the relevant claims and test whether the proposed conclusion could be false while the passage remains true.
Common mistake: Turning an association into a cause or confusing a possible explanation with the only explanation.
Practice this skillEvery station using the replacement sensor has completed validation. Some coastal stations use that sensor. Other stations continue to use the older sensor while their validation results are reviewed.
Which conclusion follows?
Qualifiers & precise language
Track words such as only, some, ordinarily and unless. Compare the exact population and time window in the option with those in the passage.
Common mistake: Strengthening some into all, or dropping an exception from an otherwise accurate paraphrase.
Practice this skillAll overnight inspections require advance approval. Daytime remote inspections also require advance approval when they involve access to a restricted area. The regional team carries out several such daytime inspections each month.
Which statement is supported?
Procedures & conditions
Separate requirements from permissions. Write the sequence of conditions, identify exceptions, and apply only the conditions the scenario actually satisfies.
Common mistake: Assuming that a necessary condition is sufficient for approval or that an exception removes every other requirement.
Practice this skillTeams ordinarily submit travel notice at least two days before departure. Emergency authorization waives this notice requirement. Every team, including a team with emergency authorization, must complete an equipment check before departure.
A team has emergency authorization but has not completed the equipment check. What follows?
Mechanical Comprehension
Forces, motion & energy
Draw the forces and choose a direction. Check whether the situation involves equilibrium, acceleration or energy transfer. Use the force component in the direction of motion.
Common mistake: Treating motion as proof of an unbalanced force or assuming equal force means equal acceleration.
Practice this skillTwo carts of mass 2 kg and 4 kg each experience the same constant net force. How does the 2 kg cart’s acceleration compare with the 4 kg cart’s?
Gears, pulleys & levers
Trace each connection. Count rope segments supporting a moving load, compare perpendicular lever arms, and remember that a force advantage costs distance in an ideal machine.
Common mistake: Counting every visible pulley as a force multiplier or ignoring the direction change at a gear mesh.

Fluids, pressure & heat
Identify the fluid depth, area or displaced volume that matters. Separate pressure from force and temperature from transferred heat. State the idealization before calculating.
Common mistake: Assuming equal pressure means equal force on pistons with different areas.

Electricity & circuits
Identify which components share a branch or the same two nodes. In series the current is common; in parallel the voltage is common. Check the effect of opening or closing a path.
Common mistake: Treating a drawn crossing as a connection without a junction, or assuming current is used up by a resistor.

Aviation and nautical information
Understand the concepts behind the terminology. The four topics below cover aircraft principles and systems, operations, nautical knowledge and navigation.
Aviation principles
Name the motion or force first. Match roll, pitch and yaw to the correct axis and control surface. For performance questions, state the flight condition before deciding what changes.
- Forces
- Lift, weight, thrust and drag. In steady, straight, level flight at constant speed, the net force is zero.
- Axes and controls
- Roll: longitudinal axis and ailerons. Pitch: lateral axis and elevator. Yaw: vertical axis and rudder, for a conventional airplane.
- Angle of attack
- The angle between the wing’s chord line and the relative wind. It is different from the aircraft’s pitch attitude.
- Performance
- Air density, aircraft weight and configuration affect performance. Understand the direction of an effect before memorizing a relationship.
Common mistake: Confusing pitch with climb, or treating a stall as an engine failure. A wing stalls when its critical angle of attack is exceeded.

On a conventional airplane, which primary control surface directly controls rotation about the longitudinal, nose-to-tail axis?
Aviation operations
Ask what each instrument actually measures. Distinguish heading from track and altitude from climb rate. For a systems question, follow the component’s function through the stated situation.
- Instruments
- Distinguish airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, attitude and heading. Learn which instruments depend on pitot or static pressure.
- Aircraft systems
- Know the basic purpose of fuel, electrical, hydraulic, ignition and landing-gear systems. Read any aircraft-specific conditions in the question.
- Airport information
- Review runway designations, signs, markings and basic airspace terminology in the current FAA publications.
- Weather
- Understand wind direction, visibility, clouds, pressure and density. Separate a reported observation from a forecast.
Common mistake: Assuming all aircraft use the same system, or using an instrument to infer something it does not directly measure.

In a steady, level flight segment, a pilot wants the rate of climb or descent. Which instrument is designed to show that rate?
Nautical knowledge
Fix the vessel’s viewpoint before naming a direction. For an encounter, identify the vessel types, relative positions and stated rule set before choosing an action.
- Ship directions
- Bow is forward, stern is aft, port is the vessel’s left side and starboard its right side when facing forward.
- Parts and dimensions
- Distinguish the hull and keel, beam across the vessel, draft below the waterline, and freeboard above it.
- Lights and encounters
- Learn red port and green starboard sidelights. Then study overtaking, head-on and crossing situations with their stated conditions.
- Naval aviation context
- Review basic carrier functions and major milestones. Distinguish the first U.S. aircraft carrier from later purpose-built carriers.
Common mistake: Treating port as the observer’s left, or assuming one vessel always has priority regardless of overtaking, visibility or a narrow channel.
Practice nautical knowledgeWorked example
You are on a vessel, facing directly toward its stern. Which side of the vessel is on your right?
For further study, use the FAA Pilot’s Handbook, current FAA publications, Coast Guard navigation rules and Naval History and Heritage Command. Use these to understand a topic, not to memorize an assumed list of test questions.

distance = speed × time; work completed = rate × time
- Average
mean = sum ÷ count
- Powers and logarithms
aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ; logₐ(b) = c means aᶜ = b
For real logarithms: a > 0, a ≠ 1, b > 0.
- Triangles and circles
area of triangle = bh/2; a² + b² = c²; circle area = πr²; circumference = 2πr
The Pythagorean relation applies to a right triangle, with c the hypotenuse.
- Volumes
rectangular prism = lwh; cylinder = πr²h; cone = πr²h/3
- Probability
P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B given A); P(not A) = 1 − P(A)
Mechanical Comprehension
- Force and weight
F_net = ma; weight = mg
F_net is the total force in newtons, m is mass in kilograms, a is acceleration in m/s², and g is gravitational acceleration.
- Work and energy
W = Fd; kinetic energy = mv²/2; gravitational potential energy = mgh
For W = Fd, the force is constant and acts along the displacement.
- Torque
torque = force × perpendicular distance from pivot
- Fluids
pressure = force ÷ area; fluid pressure increase = ρgh; buoyant force = displaced fluid weight
ρ is density (kg/m³), g is gravitational acceleration (m/s²), and h is depth (m). With SI units, pressure is in pascals.
- Ideal machines
input work = output work
Assumes no friction or other energy loss.
- Electricity
V = IR; P = VI; series R = R₁ + R₂; parallel 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂
V is voltage in volts, I is current in amperes, R is resistance in ohms, and P is electrical power in watts.
Prepare for the performance tasks
Learn each control and response rule on its own, then combine tasks. Use a desktop or laptop and stereo headphones for the listening and combined exercises.
Spatial orientation
Locate north and the vehicle’s heading. Rotate your viewpoint to face that heading, then identify the target’s direction. Build accuracy before trying to shorten your response time.
Watch for: Keeping your own screen viewpoint when the vehicle faces another direction.
Practice spatial orientationSelective listening
Check the target-ear cue before each block. Attend only to that ear, respond to both odd and even numbers with the displayed controls, and ignore letters and the other ear.
Watch for: Listening to the left ear for odd numbers and the right ear for even numbers. The cue selects one ear for both responses.
Practice selective listeningTracking
Calibrate first, confirm which movement each input produces, and use small corrections. Learn each target separately before dividing attention between them.
Watch for: Overcorrecting after the target changes direction or assuming another controller uses the same mapping.
Practice trackingDivided attention
Keep a regular visual scan between targets. Learn each displayed alert sequence before starting, then carry it out in order while returning attention to tracking.
Watch for: Fixating on one target or rushing an alert sequence so that the required order is lost.
Practice divided attentionSet up sound and controls
- Check left and right sound. Wear stereo headphones, disable mono audio or spatial effects that change channel placement, and complete the channel check at a comfortable volume. Stop if the spoken signal is unclear.
- Confirm each movement. Move the control in one direction and observe the cursor. Repeat for each axis and response button. Use the displayed calibration and mapping rather than relying on the label “inverted.”
- Keep the setup stable. Use the same control mode and sensitivity when comparing attempts. Keyboard, pointer and game-controller inputs can impose different demands.
- Protect the run from interruptions. Keep the practice tab visible and the device connected. An interrupted or restarted task is different from an uninterrupted attempt; check the saved result before comparing it.
Our controls and target behavior are original practice settings. Public research descriptions disagree on the direction of one stick axis, so this product does not promise an exact match to test-center hardware. Follow the actual test instructions and equipment demonstration.
How the combined tasks build up
- Orient yourself using a map and viewpoint.
- Attend to a cued ear and identify its odd or even numbers.
- Follow a one-dimensional target and a two-dimensional target separately.
- Track both targets at the same time.
- Continue both tracking tasks while responding to the listening stream.
- Continue both tracking tasks while carrying out taught alert-response sequences.
The alert labels and sequences are fictional practice rules, not aircraft emergency procedures. Our sequence draws on public research on the performance tasks; its clocks and control settings are not a guaranteed APEX blueprint.
Understand the trait-question format
The Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory concerns personal preferences. Prepare by understanding the format and answering honestly. There is no useful knowledge answer key to learn.

Short knowledge drills have eight questions with answer feedback. Full practice follows the academic subjects, aviation and nautical knowledge, trait familiarization and performance tasks in sequence. The current Navy overview lists six subtests. Older guides may list a separate biographical component or extra scores; check current instructions instead of assuming every older component still applies.
Build a focused study plan
- Confirm what you need. Check the officer program, full ASTB-E or OAR requirement, test appointment and current instructions before buying or scheduling practice.
- Sample each subject. Try the short drills. Record the method behind a mistake: calculation, reading scope, mechanical principle, terminology or spatial perspective.
- Repair knowledge gaps. Study the relevant example or reference, then explain the solution without looking. Return to the drill on another day to distinguish understanding from immediate recall.
- Build control familiarity. Learn listening, orientation and tracking separately. Once each rule feels clear, work on the combined tasks and review the particular metric that deteriorates under divided attention.
- Complete a full sitting. Set aside uninterrupted time and use the intended equipment. Full knowledge feedback is held until the end so that you can practice sustained work.
- Compare equivalent attempts. Review completion, difficulty, previous question exposure and device settings as well as accuracy. Choose the next drill from the weakest evidence, not just the lowest-looking number.
Understand the scores
Official scores combine information from different components. The Navy’s current overview names four scores:
- OAR — Officer Aptitude Rating
- 20–80; based on the math, reading and mechanical portions.
- AQR — Academic Qualifications Rating
- 1–9; an aviation academic qualification score.
- PFAR — Pilot Flight Aptitude Rating
- 1–9; a pilot flight aptitude score.
- FOFAR — Flight Officer Aptitude Rating
- 1–9; a flight officer aptitude score.
Minimum requirements and competitive scores depend on your program and current selection criteria. Meeting a minimum is not a guarantee of selection. Confirm the current requirement with your recruiter.
How to use your practice results
- Knowledge: check correct answers, completion and difficulty. A high percentage on a few questions is different from finishing the intended section accurately.
- Orientation and listening: look at accuracy and response time together. Check listening misses, wrong responses and responses to signals that should have been ignored.
- Tracking: compare target distance and time on target using the same setup. Review whether one control deteriorates while you attend to the other.
- Procedures: review completed sequences, errors and response time. Practice the taught sequence before trying to execute it faster.
Our goals are demanding editorial learning targets. We do not translate practice results into OAR, AQR, PFAR or FOFAR scores, fabricate an applicant distribution, infer a personality profile or predict selection.
Before test day
- Confirm the required identification, appointment, test components and any accessibility arrangements with the testing office.
- Practice calculations without a calculator. The Navy supplies relevant formulas and scratch materials.
- Read the instructions and use the test’s own equipment familiarization. Do not assume practice controls or timing are identical.
- Work accurately and keep moving. A difficult adaptive question does not itself mean that you are performing badly.

Retakes: plan before using another attempt
- Current Navy guidance permits three Series-E attempts.
- A full retest requires 30 full calendar days after completion of the whole battery; the Navy says this interval cannot be waived.
- A full-battery retest repeats the battery. Scores from different attempts cannot be combined.
- The most recent scores replace earlier scores, including when the new scores are lower.

What is the difference between the ASTB-E and OAR?
OAR uses Math Skills, Reading Comprehension and Mechanical Comprehension. The full ASTB-E also includes Aviation and Nautical Information, the Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory and Performance Based Measures. Aviation applicants need the full battery; confirm the requirement for your officer program.
How long does the ASTB-E take?
Navy guidance estimates about 2 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes for the full ASTB-E, and 1–2 hours for OAR. Official adaptive question counts can vary. Our full practice uses 84 knowledge questions, a short unscored trait familiarization and a sequence of performance tasks. Its counts and clocks are original preparation settings.
What does the ASTB pass include?
One ASTB pass covers its math, reading, mechanical, aviation and nautical drills, performance drills, replays and full practice. Accounts with free first attempts can try each short drill once. The public study guide and examples are free, and saved results remain available after a pass expires. The separate OAR product is not unlocked by an ASTB pass.
Can I see answers during full practice?
Knowledge answers and explanations appear after the full sitting ends. Short knowledge drills explain each submitted answer. Performance tasks show the movement and signals needed to play; their results are reviewed afterward. Trait familiarization has no correct answers or score.
Do I need a joystick or special equipment?
Use a desktop or laptop and stereo headphones for listening and combined performance practice. Check the controls supported on the practice setup screen and complete its calibration. Browser controls can teach the task but do not reproduce the motor demands of the Navy’s test-center equipment. You do not need to buy equipment to read the guide or work on knowledge questions.
What should I choose on the personality questions?
Choose the statement that describes you more closely. The six original pairs here introduce the format; there is no ideal answer key, trait score or suggested pilot profile. We do not save your choices. Full practice records only that familiarization was completed.
What ASTB score do I need?
Official results include an OAR score from 20–80 and AQR, PFAR and FOFAR scores from 1–9. Requirements depend on the program and current selection criteria. Practice accuracy and performance measures are learning feedback; we do not convert them into official scores or predict selection.
Can I retake the ASTB-E?
Current Navy guidance allows three Series-E attempts and requires 30 full calendar days after completion of the full battery before another full attempt. A full-battery retest repeats the battery, and scores cannot be combined across attempts. The most recent scores replace earlier scores even if lower. Confirm your eligibility and appointment with the testing office.
Can I use a calculator, skip questions or go back?
The Navy does not permit a calculator and supplies relevant formulas and scratch materials. Adaptive questions cannot be skipped or revisited. Our knowledge practice also moves forward after each submitted answer. Use the original formula reference to learn the method, then practice calculations without a calculator.
