SHL Verbal practice

Read a short passage, weigh four possible answers, and choose the one best supported by the text. Practice details, main ideas, inferences, the author’s intent and tone, and how the author would respond.

Choose your sitting

Before you start

  • Use the passage as your evidence. You do not need outside knowledge.
  • Choose one of four options, then select Submit answer. A selection alone does not count.
  • In this practice, you move forward only. Skip question records no answer and cannot be undone.
  • The 15-minute clock runs continuously, including background tabs and reloads. There is no pause or separate time limit for each question.

When time ends, an unsubmitted selection is recorded as unanswered. Your answers and explanations appear after you finish.

This is original Verbal Ability-style practice with our editorial difficulty levels. It does not reproduce SHL’s adaptive algorithm or cover every SHL verbal assessment variant.

Try two examples before you start

These original examples are untimed and unscored. Read only the passage, choose the best answer in your head, then reveal why each option does or does not fit. Opening examples is free and does not start a sitting.

Example 1

Passage for example 1

A language center is changing how students reserve places in its evening courses. Returning students may reserve a place before registration opens, provided they have completed the previous level. Their reservation is held until three days after general registration begins. New students must first complete a placement interview, but an interview does not reserve a place. They can enroll once general registration opens, subject to availability. Anyone receiving a funded place must also submit a funding letter before the course starts. The center introduced early reservations because returning students often knew which course they needed, while new students sometimes changed their choice after an interview.

Which description meets the stated conditions for reserving a place before general registration opens?

  1. A.

A new student who has completed a placement interview.

  2. B.

A returning student who has completed the previous level.

  3. C.

A funded student who has submitted the funding letter.

  4. D.

A new student who has already selected an evening course.

Reveal the answer and method

Answer B: A returning student who has completed the previous level.

Early reservations are offered to returning students who have completed the previous level. An interview, funding letter, or course preference does not independently provide that eligibility.

Evidence in the passage

“Returning students may reserve a place before registration opens, provided they have completed the previous level.”
“New students must first complete a placement interview, but an interview does not reserve a place.”

Why each option does or doesn’t fit

  • A.A new student who has completed a placement interview.

The passage explicitly says an interview does not reserve a place. New students must wait for general registration.

  • B.A returning student who has completed the previous level.

This matches both stated conditions for an early reservation: returning status and completion of the previous level.

    Correct answer

  • C.A funded student who has submitted the funding letter.

The funding letter is an additional requirement before the course starts, not an entitlement to an early reservation.

  • D.A new student who has already selected an evening course.

Choosing a course is not enough. The early reservation rule is restricted to eligible returning students.

Example 2

Passage for example 2

A neighborhood equipment cooperative has received an offer of twenty donated power tools. Its waiting list might suggest that more tools would immediately increase lending. However, most delayed requests concern equipment that requires a safety demonstration, and only two volunteers currently provide those demonstrations. Several existing tools remain unused each week because no demonstration slot is available. The committee therefore proposes accepting the donation but directing the next fundraising round toward training more volunteers rather than buying storage cabinets. It will review storage needs after those volunteers begin work. The proposal does not dismiss the value of additional equipment; it treats the shortage of trained people as the more immediate restriction on its use.

Which statement best captures the passage’s main point?

  1. A.

The cooperative should measure demand before accepting donated tools.

  2. B.

Donations will be more useful once the cooperative obtains additional storage.

  3. C.

The waiting list primarily reflects the poor condition of existing equipment.

  4. D.

Increasing trained volunteer capacity should take priority over expanding storage.

Reveal the answer and method

Answer D: Increasing trained volunteer capacity should take priority over expanding storage.

The passage identifies safety demonstrations as the current bottleneck and explains why volunteer training should receive the next funding. Accepting tools remains worthwhile, but equipment alone will not remove that bottleneck.

Evidence in the passage

“Several existing tools remain unused each week because no demonstration slot is available.”
“The committee therefore proposes accepting the donation but directing the next fundraising round toward training more volunteers rather than buying storage cabinets.”

Why each option does or doesn’t fit

  • A.The cooperative should measure demand before accepting donated tools.

The committee proposes accepting the donation now. It does not make acceptance conditional on a new demand study.

  • B.Donations will be more useful once the cooperative obtains additional storage.

Storage is to be reviewed later. The passage identifies demonstration capacity, rather than storage, as the immediate restriction.

  • C.The waiting list primarily reflects the poor condition of existing equipment.

The passage attributes delayed requests to unavailable demonstration slots and does not say that existing equipment is in poor condition.

  • D.Increasing trained volunteer capacity should take priority over expanding storage.

This captures the recommended priority and its justification across the whole passage.
